Lady Chaps Drop Two in Cactus Classic

TUCSON, Arizona (February 17, 2018) – The Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals failed to tally a hit in the opening game of the 2018 Cactus Classic against No. 9 Dixie State, falling 8-0 followed with a 4-0 loss to Biola Saturday at Lincoln Park. The pair of losses marks the first time LCU has suffered consecutive shutout losses this season. LCU last suffered consecutive shutout losses March of 2017.

LOST BATS
Dixie State's Cambrie Hazel completed a no-hitter in the opening day of the tournament. Making her fourth career start, the freshman became the first pitcher to record a no-hitter against the Lady Chaps. The Trailblazers (9-0) managed to string together eight runs off 11 hits to hand LCU their first shutout loss of the season. Brenna Hinck led Dixie State going 2-for-4 at the plate and driving in three runs.

IN THE CIRCLE
Monique Francois (3-1) started in the circle for Lubbock Christian, throwing five innings and allowing four runs. She struck out six DSU batters in her first loss of the season. Clarissa Martinez and Taylor Hinojos each pitched an inning of relief for the Lady Chaps and they combined to allow one earned run. Hazel notched her fifth win (5-0) in the complete game no-hitter. She recorded 12 strikeouts in the process.

STILL NO BATS
The Lady Chaps offense remained silent in the second game of the day against Biola (6-3). This time, LCU suffered a one-hitter, with Sydney Beuthien managing the only hit for the Lady Chaparrals. The Eagles scored their first run off a Lady Chap error in the first inning, but was held hitless through the first four innings of play. In the fifth inning, Biola recorded a couple of runs and plated an insurance run in the sixth inning. The Eagles were led at the plate by Selina Sherlin, who was 1-for-2 and drove in two of the Eagles runs.

IN THE CIRCLE PART TWO
Clarissa Martinez (1-1) started the second game for LCU and pitched 4.1 innings. She allowed two earned runs off of three hits in her first loss of the season. Taylor Hinojos pitched the final 1.2 innings in relief and game up one run on one hit. Terri Van Dagens (2-0) started for Biola, pitching the first four innings. She allowed one hit and struck out five LCU batters to notch her second victory. Paige Austin pitched the final three innings, allowing no hits and striking out four, en route to earning her first save this season.
