LUBBOCK, Texas (February 18, 2018) –
Andrew Pratt hit two three-run home runs and drove in seven runs to help No.7 Lubbock Christian University defeat No.22 Angelo State University 12-5 Sunday afternoon at Hays Field.
Pratt's seven runs-batted-in are the most produced by Chap since Brett Kauten drove in nine on Apr. 26, 2013 at Wayland Baptist. Ironically, the last time a Chap produced two home runs in a game came against Angelo State last season off the bat of
Caleb Koedyker (Feb. 17, 2017). Pratt was 3-of-5 in the game.
The first three-run homer from Pratt came in a five-run fifth inning to help LCU overcome a 5-3 deficit. His second came in a four-run eighth inning to provide LCU some insurance. It capped a swing of nine unanswered runs for LCU.
Hiding in the shadows of Pratt's power performance was the mound work of relief pitcher
Chandler Casey. He replaced Chaps starting pitcher
Ricky Contreras in the fifth inning and went the final 4.2 innings not allowing a run off three hits. Casey (1-0) claimed his first win as a member of the Chaps.
LCU opened the game's scoring in the second inning with
Andres Negron producing an RBI single. Moments later, a wild pitch allowed
Payton Rhodes to score and LCU increased their lead to 2-0. It was quickly offset in the top of the third inning, as Alex Salcido hit a solo home run to get ASU on the scoreboard. It was the first of four hits for the Rams, with hits by Nick Novak and Jacob Boston each driving in runs to help ASU take a 3-2 lead. LCU tied the game in the home half of the third inning with Pratt's first RBI of the game. The Rams regained the lead in the fifth inning with a pair of runs in the fifth inning providing ASU a 5-3 lead.
Neither starting pitcher received a decision. Contreras went 4.1 innings for LCU and allowed five runs off eight hits. Carson Childers started for ASU and went 4.0 innings and allowed four runs off five hits. The loss was credited to
Josh Barnett (0-1), who surrendered Pratt's first home run.
Will Clark (3-for-4) joined Pratt with a three-hit performance. Boston (2-for-4), Andrew Morales (2-for-5) and Michael Urquidi (2-for-5) co-led the Rams in hits.
The win for LCU improved them to 2-4 on the season and it ended their seven-game losing streak in their all-time series with Angelo State. The Rams fell to 7-2. The two teams complete the three-game series with a rubber match Monday at Hays Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
