Chaps Fight to Draw with Hilltoppers

LCU Plays Second Straight Overtime Game

THE BASICS
Score: Lubbock Christian 1, St. Edward's 1
Records: LCU – 6-3-1, 2-1-1 // SEU – 2-5-2, 2-1-1
Location: Lewis-Chen Field – Austin, Texas

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • LCU got the game's first scoring chance, as Pablo Galietero Diez put a shot on goal in the 15th minute, but it was saved by SEU keeper Marko Lillic
  • The Chaps came close to scoring again in the 23rd minute, earning back-to-back corner kicks, but they were unable to get a shot on frame
  • Niklas Neumann created LCU's last scoring chance of the half in the 32nd minute with a shot on goal, but it was again saved
  • As time expired in the first half, Jeremy Bischoff headed home a corner kick to give SEU the lead
  • LCU evened things up quickly in the second half, scoring in the first eight minutes. Diez took advantage of a misplay on the SEU back line and fired a ball past Lillic's ankles to score
  • Neither team put a shot on goal again until the 78th minute, when Chen Adjei came within inches of putting the Hilltoppers back on top but was instead denied by the post
  • In the first overtime, LCU forward Fernando Flores created the only offense by either team, putting a shot on goal that was saved and missing wide with another
  • The second overtime featured just one shot by either team, as SEU's Matthew Parker fired wide, ending the game in a draw after 110 minutes

LCU HIGHLIGHTS
  • LCU keeper Braxton Thorne made for saves in the tie, bringing his career total to 118. He needs just three more to become LCU's all-time leader in that category
  • The Chaps received zero yellow cards in a game for the second time this season
  • Forward Tariq Bakkali played a season-high 76 minutes, getting off one shot during his time on the field

CHAP NOTES
  • Lubbock Christian has not beaten St. Edward's since the very first meeting between the two teams in 2013, although the last two matchups have ended in ties
  • The draw was LCU's first since October 6 of last season, when they battled to a 3-3 tie with UT Permian Basin in Lubbock
  • Through the first seven games of the 2019 season, the Chaps were not out-shot one time, but they have now tallied less shots than their opponent in three straight games
  • LCU was limited to a single goal for just the second time all season and the first time since the season-opener win over UCCS
NEXT UP
  • Lubbock Christian will now head to Dallas, where they will take on the DBU Patriots at 2 p.m. on Saturday
