Flores Nets Golden Goal to Beat OC

Chaps Win Second Straight Game

THE BASICS
Score: Lubbock Christian 2, Oklahoma Christian 1
Records: LCU – 6-2, 2-1 // OC – 4-4, 1-2
Location: LCU Soccer Field – Lubbock, Texas

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Fernando Flores opened the scoring in the 12th minute converting on a penalty kick after he was fouled in the 18-yard box to put the Chaps up 1-0
  • OC put its first shot on goal in the 26th minute, but it was saved by LCU goalkeeper Braxton Thorne
  • Thorne made back-to-back saves early in the second half to keep OC off the board, but the Eagles earned a penalty kick after a handball in the box, which was converted by Diego Vasquez to tie the game at 1-1 in the 55th minute
  • Another shot on goal from OC in the 59th minute was pushed just over the crossbar
  • Jasper Reese had a great look on goal and placed the ball just inside the back post, but it was pushed wide by the Oklahoma Christian keeper
  • OC countered after an LCU corner and came close to going ahead, but Thorne stood tall and kept them from scoring
  • Tariq Bakkali sent a shot on goal that was pushed wide in the 86th minute, and a sliding Abdou Joof just missed sending the rebound into the back of the net
  • Oklahoma Christian came about as close as they could to scoring without doing so just two and a half minutes into the overtime period. Thorne made another save to keep one shot out and Niklas Neumann cleared a second shot off the line to keep the game tied
  • Richie Vaca-Cordova got the ball in the 95th minute and sent a perfect pass to Flores in space on the left side, allowing the latter to take the ball in and beat the OC goalkeeper and win the game

LCU HIGHLIGHTS
  • Braxton Thorne's seven saves were his most in a single game this season and the most he recorded in a game since he had 12 on October 20, 2018 against St. Mary's
  • The 12th-minute penalty kick from Flores was his fourth to take this season and his third to convert successfully
  • Flores got the game-winner for the fourth time in the sixth Lubbock Christian win of the season

CHAPARRAL NOTES
  • Saturday marked the first overtime game played and therefore the first overtime win of the season for Lubbock Christian. Their last OT win was on October 4, 2018 at West Texas A&M
  • With the win, LCU moved into fourth in the Lone Star Conference standings with seven games left on the league schedule
  • Flores is in sole possession of the No. 1 spot in goals scored in the LSC now with eight
  • The Chaps were actually out-shot by the Eagles 13-12 in the contest, marking LCU's first win this season when trailing in that category
  • LCU is now 4-0 in games in which they score first and 2-0 in games that they are leading at half time
  • Thorne now has 114 career saves at LCU and passed Erik Mozzo (2012-13) to move into second all-time in that category at LCU. The Lubbock native needs just seven more to claim the program record from Hunter Ganze (2010-12)

NEXT UP
  • Lubbock Christian will be on the road for their next three games, starting with next Thursday's matchup against St. Edward's in Austin
