Walk-Off Win Highlights Day of "Extras" For Lady Chaps

LCU Produced Nine Extra-Base Hits in Doubleheader Sweep Sunday

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 10, 2019) – Lubbock Christian University combined for nine extra-base hits, as they produced an 8-7 walk-off win over West Texas A&M and followed with a 5-2 win over Texas – Permian Basin to complete a Sunday doubleheader sweep in the opening day of play at the LCU Invitational at PlainsCapital Park.

Game 1 – West Texas A&M
LCU Highlights:
  • Lindzi Clemmer went 4-for-5 with two doubles. The four-hit game was a career high for the senior infielder.
  • Clemmer scored the game-winning run on a walk-off single by K'leigh Arredondo with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to complete a 3-for-5 performance with three runs-batted-in.
  • Megan Darling went 1-for-1 with a double and two RBI. She had four at-bats and reached base in all four at-bats, as she walked twice and was hit-by-pitch.
  • Jordan Wehr claimed the win in relief, allowing two runs off two hits in 3.0 innings of work.
 
Turning Point:
Trailing 7-6 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Savannah Wysocki was at first base, Lindzi Clemmer hit a single to right field and the ball was misplayed by the right fielder and Wysocki was able to score all the way from first base to tie the game at 7-7.
 
How it Happened:
  • LCU struck first with a two-run two-out double by Megan Darling to give LCU a 2-0 lead.
  • WTAMU responded with a trio of hits in the top of the second inning leading to a two-run inning to tie the game at 2-2. The Lady Buffs scored a trio of runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run home run by WTAMU starting pitcher Shayne Starkey.
  • Trailing 5-2, LCU started their march back in the bottom of the sixth inning. Logan Grado led off the inning with a pinch-hit single and was the first of an eventual six consecutive batters to reach base safely. Wysocki and Arredondo each had a double in the string of batters reaching safely and it led to a four-run inning to give LCU a 6-5 lead.  WTAMU turned an inning-ending double play to prevent any further damage in the inning.
  • In the top of the seventh inning, Amelya Huggins clubbed a two-run home run to regain the Lady Buffs lead at 7-6.
  • Alexis Reed walked with one out to bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning. Wysocki followed with a fielder's choice and it set up Clemmer's single to right field, which was misplayed. Arredondo followed with the game winning single to score Clemmer.
 
 Inside the Numbers:
  • The Lady Chaps hit six doubles in the game. It marks the second game this season in which they have hit at least six doubles (they hit seven on Feb. 2 vs. Southern Nazarene).
  • The walk-off win was the second walk-off win this season for the Lady Chaps, and each have come with overcome deficits of three-or-more runs (Feb. 2 vs. Southern Nazarene was the last walk-off win).
  • LCU's top three batters in the batting order (Wysocki, Clemmer, Arredondo) combined to go 9-for-15 at the plate with six runs and five RBI.

Game 2 – Texas – Permian Basin
LCU Highlights:
  • Morgan Dufour went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run.
  • Alivia Villarreal went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run.
  • Savannah Wysocki went 1-for-3 with a solo homer.
  • Amber Carlton grabbed the win (2-0), allowing three hits in 5.0 innings and allowing one earned run.
  • Jordan Weht retired all six batters she faced over 2.0 innings to record her first save of the season.
 
Turning Point:
A two-out single by K'leigh Arredondo prolonged the first inning with two outs, as it was the first of four straight hits to help LCU score four runs in the first inning.
 
How it Happened:
  • Following Arredondo's two-out single, Villarreal produced her first home run of the season and the two-run homer put LCU on the scoreboard. Alexis Reed followed with a single to left field and it set up a two-run home run by Morgan Dufour, who blasted her first home run of the season after 16 last season.
  • Alyssa Lopez singled in UTPB's first run in the third inning, and an unearned run in the third inning led to the Falcons cutting LCU's lead to 4-2.
  • Wysocki hit her first collegiate home run in the fifth inning with a ball edging the top of the right-centerfield fence for an insurance run and a 5-2 advantage.
  • Carlton did not allow a hit to the final 11 batters she faced. It was extended to 17 straight batters without a hit once Wehr completed her outing.
 
 Inside the Numbers:
  • UTPB starting pitcher Abrie Castillo threw 30 pitches in the first inning. She through 64 over the remaining 5.0 innings of her complete game loss. Castillo went through 11 consecutive batters without allowing, once allowing the two-run homer to Defour. Wysocki's solo shot ended the sequence.
  • The victory for LCU placed them 25-0 all-time against UTPB.
  • LCU produced three home runs in the game for a first time this season. LCU had six games last season in which they hit at least three home runs.
  • Dufour's home run was her 17th in her LCU career and 45th in her Hearltand Conference career. She is second on the Heartland Conference all-time career home run list.

Up Next:
LCU closes their nine-game homestand and the final day of the LCU Invitational Monday facing University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) at 1 p.m. and West Texas A&M at 5 p.m.
