LCU Win Streak Stopped By DBU

Fowler Post 36th Career Double-Double in Loss

DALLAS, Texas (Feb. 14, 2019) – Lubbock Christian University took a late lead but was unable to hold onto it, losing their first game since Jan. 26, 2019 in an 80-77 defeat against Dallas Baptist.

The Chaps led by as many as five points with 3:15 left to play in the game after an Isaac Asrat layup. Dallas Baptist bounced back, however, and closed the game out on a 13-5 run to win by just three points. LCU is now 16-8 on the year with a 7-5 record in Heartland Conference play.

Senior forward Brennen Fowler led all scorers in the game with 26 points, marking the 10th time this season that the Smyer native was the top Chaparral scorer. Fowler also added in a team-high 13 rebounds for his 11th double-double of the season and the 36th of his career.

Isaac Asrat followed closely behind Fowler with 24 points of own, and Rashaan Proctor posted his sixth double figure scoring game of the season with 10 points in the game.

Proctor opened the scoring for the Chaps, getting the team's first four points as LCU went up by four just two minutes into the game. The Patriots took back the lead quickly, as Jordan Manse hit a three-pointer with 15:30 to go in the first half, and they quickly got up by as many as nine points.

The Chaps did not let DBU get the lead to double-digits, however, and they closed the game to just two points with a layup from Kobe Thompson in the paint with 2:59 left in the half. LCU got to the free throw line twice in the final three minutes after DBU buckets, but split their free throws each time and went into the locker room down by five points.

Lubbock Christian and Dallas Baptist traded baskets early in the first half, with the Chaps cutting the deficit to four and the Patriots leading by as many as nine. LCU's comeback began with just over 13 minutes left in the game, as Asrat got to the free throw line and sparked a quick 8-0 run that brought the Chaps within one.

Proctor gave the team its first lead of the second half with just under 10 minutes to play with a slam dunk assisted by Asrat. LCU and DBU then see-sawed back and forth with the lead for the next six minutes. Asrat then gave the Chaps their biggest lead and a chance to take a road win when he hit a jumper and a layup on back-to-back possessions, putting LCU up by five.

The Chaps continued to hold onto the lead until the 1:13 mark, when DBU guard Chandler Jacobs hit a layup and was fouled. He hit the foul shot and tied the game at 74-all. Jacobs then hit a three-pointer with 47 seconds left to give the Patriots the lead.

LCU was unable to score on its next possession and was then forced to foul to stop the clock. DBU hit the necessary free throws to close out the game with its 10th win in Heartland Conference play.

TURNING POINT
