LUBBOCK, Texas (Feb. 23, 2019) – Lubbock Christian University returned to the Rip Griffin Center with a bang, taking revenge on Oklahoma Christian with a 79-60 win.
The Chaps were led by a familiar face, as
Brennen Fowler poured in 28 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. It was his fourth straight game with at least 20 points and his fourth straight double-double. He now has 14 on the season and 39 career double-doubles. Fowler was 12-15 from the floor overall, but 11-12 on shots taken inside the arc.
Fowler was not alone, however, as both
Rashaan Proctor and
Kentton Williams both finished in double figures. Proctor had 13 total points and was an astounding plus-24 during his 25 minutes on the floor, while Williams scored 11 off the bench. Redshirt freshman
Cameron Copley had the second best plus/minus numbers of the game at 19 over. He racked up a career-high 9 assists along with nine points and six rebounds.
The game was a back-and-forth affair in the early goings with LCU taking an early lead on a Fowler jumper with just three minutes in. A Williams three-pointer with just over 11 minutes to play sparked a short 8-0 Chap run, but OC did not let the gap grow any wider and retook the lead with 4:12 left in the half.
Williams hit yet another three-pointer to give the Chaparrals the lead back, and LCU closed the half out on a 10-2 run, including a buzzer-beater jumper in the paint from
Isaac Asrat, that gave them an 32-25 lead heading into the locker room.
In the second half, the Chaps continued to push ahead, getting the lead out to double-digits for the first time with 15:48 on
Kentton Williams' third three-pointer of the day. LCU would lead by double-digits for the remainder of the game.
Even though they led after the first 20 minutes of the game, Lubbock Christian continued its trend of shooting better in the second half than they did in the first, by hitting nearly 60 percent of their shots in the final 20 minutes, which kept the Eagles at bay. LCU finished the game with a .527 field goal percentage, marking the 14
th time this season they made more than half their shots in a game. The Chaps are 13-1 in those games.
The Eagles also improved their shooting in the second half, but from just 26 percent in the first half to 37 percent in the second. OC's 60 points were their third-fewest total in a single game this season and their lowest total in the last 10 games.
LCU did not go on any run of more than six points in the final 15 minutes of the game, but still increased their lead as time wore on. The largest lead of the game came with just over a minute to go, as the Chaps went up by 20 on a pair of
Kobe Thompson free throws.
TURNING POINT
With 4:12 left to go in the game, Oklahoma Christian took its last lead of the game. LCU responded to the one-point deficit by rattling off 10 of the game's next 12 points, including Asrat's halftime buzzer-beater that put the Chaps up by seven going into the locker room.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Lubbock Christian held Oklahoma Christian to just a .319 field goal percentage, well below their season average of .439. It was the Eagle's second-lowest percentage of the season, only shooting worse in a 67-54 loss to St. Edward's on 1/12. LCU has now held 12 opponents to shooting percentages worse than 40 percent, going 11-1 in those games.
