Game 1 vs. TAMIU
LCU Highlights:
Turning Point:
Alivia Villarreal's second home run of the game was her second two-run home run and extended LCU's 3-2 lead to 5-2 and the pair of runs were the first two runs of a four-run fourth inning for LCU.
How it Happened:
- LCU opened the game's scoring in the second inning with a two-run home run over the left-centerfield fence. Savannah Wysocki made it 3-0 later in the inning with a line drive double over the head of the left fielder.
- Lindsey Smith cut into the LCU lead with a two-run single in the third inning to place the LCU lead at 3-2.
- Villarreal's second home run came in the fourth inning and it extended LCU's lead to 5-3. Wysocki followed again with an RBI after a Villarreal home run, with her hit in the fourth inning resulting in a RBI-single for a 6-3 lead. K'leigh Arredondo collected in RBI with a bases loaded groundout to cap the four-run inning.
- LCU produced some insurance runs in the seventh inning with a run scoring on an error and a wild pitch for a 9-2 advantage.
Inside the Numbers:
- LCU improved to 22-5 this season when scoring first and 23-1 when out-hitting their opponents.
- Villarreal's two-home run game was her first multi-homer game of her LCU career and she is the third Lady Chap to hit two home runs in a game this season.
- Jordan Wehr went the distance (7.0 innings) for her fourth complete game of the season. She allowed two run runs (no earned runs) off six hits and struck out three batters to improve to 11-5.
- LCU was 1-for-9 in two-out at-bats, leading to 10 runners stranded.
- TAMIU was 0-for-7 getting the leadoff batter aboard.
- Morgan Chavarrial was 2-or-4 in the losing cause for TAMIU.
Game 2 vs. TAMIU
LCU Highlights:
Turning Point:
Trailing 3-2 in the sixth inning, LCU was unable to tie the game despite runners in scoring position and one out, as a pair of groundouts allowed TAMIU to hold the lead.
How it Happened:
- Melanie Gamboa and Maya Paul each had an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning for the Dustdevils, with an error mixed in Gamboa's hit to allow an additional run to score. The hits were two of three leading to a 3-0 TAMIU lead and their only inning of run production (LCU pitcher Amber Carlton held TAMIU to three hits outside of the second inning).
- A two-out error in the sixth inning allowed a pair of unearned LCU runs to score in the fifth inning and LCU cut the deficit to 3-2.
Inside the Numbers:
- LCU fell to 6-6 in one-run games. Of LCU's last seven losses, five have been one-run losses. LCU has dropped their last five one-run decisions.
- The Lady Chaps fell for only the second time this season when outhitting (LCU had eight hits and allowed six) an opponent, falling to 23-2 in the category.
- For a second straight game, LCU went 1-9 in two-out at-bats. They also stranded 11 runners. On the day, LCU combined to go 2-for-18 in two-out at-bats and they stranded 21 runners.
- LCU was 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position (4-for-17 with runners on base).
- In a quirky statistic, in losses, Alexa Riggs is hitting .345 (10-for-29). She is hitting .313 in wins.
- Heather Ruiz was 2-for-3 for TAMIU and was the only player for the Dustdevils with a multi-hit performance.
Up Next:
LCU remains in Laredo and will face Texas A&M International Saturday at noon for their final regular season contest. With the loss in the second game, LCU is eliminated from contention towards claiming at least a share of the conference regular season title. LCU is currently sitting as the No.4-seed for the five-team Heartland Conference Tournament, but a win Saturday could possibly move them into a higher (as in better) spot depending on the outcome of the doubleheaders involving Oklahoma Christian (facing Rogers State) and St. Mary's (facing St. Edward's). LCU (16-13 in conference) has the tie-breaker advantage over Rogers State (16-12) if the two squads finish in a tie for third place in the conference standings. It is possible LCU could move into a share of second place in either a two-or-three-way tie. If it is a two-way tie with St. Mary's, then St. Mary's would own the tiebreaker to take the No.2-seed. If it is a three-way tie (involving LCU, RSU and StMU), then the No.2-seed would go to conference tiebreaker system.
