Errors Lead To Walk-Off Loss as LCU Closes Regular Season as the No.4-Seed

LCU Matches Season-High With Five Errors, as LCU Can Revenge Their Loss Thursday against TAMIU in San Antonio

LAREDO, Texas (April 27, 2019) – Lubbock Christian University was three outs away from claiming the No.3-seed at the Heartland Conference Tournament, but Texas A&M University took advantage of LCU's fifth error of the game and scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to walk-off a 5-4 win over the Lady Chaparrals Saturday afternoon. The loss has LCU entering next week's Heartland Conference Tournament as the No.4-seed of the five-team tournament, which will be hosted by St. Mary's, who claimed the No.1-seed as the regular season co-champions of the conference.

Turning Point:
In the top of seventh inning, TAMIU was able to get the winning run to third base with one out and an infield error allowed Morgan Chavarria, the winning run, to score from third base.
 
How it Happened:
  • LCU took the opening lead of the game in the second inning with an RBI-double by Breanna Anderson allowing Alivia Villarreal to score for a 1-0 advantage.
  • Shelby Edwards and Lindsey Smith produced back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom of the second inning to gie TAMIU their first lead of the game.
  • With the top of the order due up, LCU led off the third inning with a base hit by Savannah Wysocki, who would end up scoring on a single from KK Lopez-Liu to tie the game at 2-2. They made it 4-2 with a two-out single by Villarreal, which scored a pair of runs.  
  • Two LCU errors allowed TAMIU to score a run in the bottom of the sixth inning and it was followed in the seventh inning with another costly error, which ended the game.
 
 Inside the Numbers:
  • LCU fell to 22-6 this season when scoring first and 23-3 when out-hitting their opponents. LCU entered the series 22-1 this season when out-hitting their opponents and their two losses in the TAMIU series came when out-hitting them.
  • LCU committed five errors in the game, matching a season high. The errors have LCU with 81 errors on the season and approaching their single-season program record of 84 from the 2011 season. The Lady Chaps have allowed an average of 1.3 unearned runs per game this season.
  • TAMIU claimed the win despite going 1-for-8 in two-out at-bats and 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
  • The loss was LCU's first of the season when leading after six innings. They are now 14-1 when leading after the sixth inning.
  • The contest marked LCU's final Heartland Conference game in program history. They wrap up Heartland play 16-14 this season and 106-45 all-time (70.2%).
  • Maya Paul (2-for-4) and Madison Schofield (2-for-4) each co-led TAMIU at the plate.
  • LCU fell to 6-7 in one-run games. Of LCU's last eight losses, six have been one-run losses. LCU has dropped their last six one-run decisions.
 
Up Next:
LCU heads to San Antonio, Texas to the Heartland Conference Tournament as the No.4-seed. They will play two games on Thursday, May 2, beginning with an 11 a.m. contest against No.5-seed Texas A&M International, marking the fourth consecutive game between the two teams. LCU was eliminated by TAMIU last season at the tournament. The Lady Chaps and Dustdevils are expected to play at 11 a.m. Thursday.
