SAN ANTONIO, Texas (May 2, 2019) – Behind a strong pitching performance by
Amber Carlton, No.4 Lubbock Christian University completed their first day of the Heartland Conference Softball Championships with a 2-1 upset win in extra innings over No.1-seed and tournament host St. Mary's Thursday evening.

Turning Point:
In the eighth inning,
Lindzi Clemmer was able to get a leadoff double on a bloop down the left field line. While the Rattlers defense was relaying the ball in, Clemmer used her speed and motored into second base with a double to setup the winning run.
How it Happened:
- LCU struck first with Morgan Dufour hitting a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing K'leigh Arredondo to score on the tag-up from third on a near collision at the plate for a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning.
- A pair of errors in the bottom of the fourth inning allowed StMU to get the tying run across with two outs.
- Lindzi Clemmer blooped a shot down the left field line and caught the defense napping, as she cruised into second base with a leadoff double in the eighth inning. She would end up scoring the go-ahead run off an RBI-groundout by Alivia Villarreal.
- The Rattlers were able to get the tying run to third base following a leadoff base hit, but Jordan Wehr replaced Amber Carlton and claimed the save recording the final out by catching a line drive.
Inside the Numbers:
- LCU improved to 4-1 in extra-inning games. They are also 8-7 in one-run games, as they won their second consecutive one-run decision (had lost the prior six straight).
- Jordan Wehr registered her team-co-leading third save and LCU leads the Heartland Conference with seven saves.
- The two teams combined to go 0-for-20 with runners in scoring position, with StMU going 0-for-13.
- Staci Johns was the pulse for StMU. She held LCU to two runs on six hits in 7.2 innings and was their only batter with a multi-hit performance (2-for-4).
- LCU had been 0-9 in games when scoring two runs or less, as the win improves the mark to 1-9.
- LCU improved their all-time record to 9-4 in Heartland Conference Tournament play.
