Joof’s Goal Leads LCU Past UTPB

Chaps Open LSC Play With Win

THE BASICS
Score: Lubbock Christian 3, UT Permian Basin 1
Records: LCU – 5-2, UTPB – 2-4
Location: LCU Soccer Field – Lubbock, Texas

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UT Permian Basin got an early lead just seven minutes into the match. A misplayed ball on the LCU back line fell to Sebastian Kristofferson who fired it into the back of the net
  • The Chaps did not take long to even things up, as Emilio Marti scored a goal that was assisted by Pablo Galietero Diez in the 11th minute
  • The Falcons got back on top just before halftime, as Jakob Beschel scored a goal that was assisted by Sergio Morgado
  • LCU tied the game up again just six minutes into the second half, as Diez scored a goal with Abdou Joof assisting
  • The Chaps earned a free kick and back-to-back corner kicks as they worked to go ahead, and Jonathan Woods pushed a shot just wide right, leaving the game knotted up
  • After a UTPB free kick, LCU went on the counter attack and Diez returned the favor, assisting Joof on what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 57th minute
  • LCU put two more shots on goal throughout the rest of the game but did not score again
  • Goalkeeper Braxton Thorne kept the game from going into overtime by grabbing hold of a high bouncing pass in the box in as UTPB tried to tie the game one last time in the closing seconds

LCU HIGHLIGHTS
  • Diez played a part in every Lubbock Christian goal, assisting the first and third scores and finding the back of the net himself once. He set a new career-high with four points in the game
  • Joof also set a new career-high with three points on his one goal and one assist
  • Thorne made two saves, bringing his season total to 21 and his record in goal to 5-2 on the year
  • Seven different Chaps recorded shots on goal, led by freshman Caram Carneiro Alves with two
  • Lubbock Christian outshout UT Permian Basin 16 to 6 in the game and had eight shots on goal to just 4 for the Falcons

CHAP NOTES
  • Prior to the game, no LCU player had more than one assist. Diez and Joof both have multiple now, and Diez leads the squad with three
  • The Chaps have started off conference play with a win for the second straight season after beating West Texas A&M in the league opener last year
  • LCU's win over UTPB was their first of the season when trailing at halftime of a game. They were previously 0-2 when trailing at the break
  • Lubbock Christian has outshot their opponent in each of its last six games. The only game that they did not outshoot the opposing team was in the season-opener against UCCS, when the shots were even at nine apiece
  • LCU had not beaten UTPB in the previous four matchups between the two teams, going 0-3-1 in that time. Thursday's win was the Chaps' first over the Falcons since October 29, 2016

NEXT UP
  • The Chaps will not play again this weekend but will look forward to next week when they play host to nationally ranked Midwestern State. Kickoff for the match is slated for 4:30 on October 3 at the LCU Soccer Field
