Chaps Use Three-Point Barrage to Blow Out Mustangs

Copley Drops Career-High 22 Points

LUBBOCK, Texas (January 2, 2020) – The Lubbock Christian men's basketball team had one of its best shooting nights of the season on Thursday, leading wire-to-wire in a 90-58 victory over Western New Mexico in the Rip Griffin Center.

Redshirt sophomore Cameron Copley led the offensive charge with a career-high 22 points in the win, shooting a ridiculous 8-9 from the field, including 6-7 from behind the arc. The six made three-pointers matched the most made by a Chap this year, which Silas Crisler and Parker Hicks have also matched. Copley also added in four assists and was plus-42 in his 23 minutes on the floor.

Copley's first basket came less than a minute into the game and put LCU up 7-0, with Ty Caswell and Lloyd Daniels having already scored. The Chaps quickly got the lead out to double figures on a three-pointer by Hicks. Hicks, Caswell and Daniels, along with Copley, Rashaan Proctor and Silas Crisler all finished the game in double-figures.

Hicks was also LCU's leading rebounder, pulling down 10 boards to go along with his 13 points for his first career double-double. Proctor also scored 13 on a perfect 5-5 shooting from the field. Daniels and Crisler scored 11 apiece, and Caswell finished the game with 10 points.

The Chaps played about as efficiently as head coach Todd Duncan could have asked throughout the rest of the first half, outscoring the Mustangs 49-20 in the first 20 minutes. Western New Mexico was held to an abysmal 28 percent shooting (7-25) overall and hit just one of their 11 three-points attempts (9.1 percent). LCU also forced them into 12 turnovers, scoring 22 points of those Mustang miscues. Lubbock Christian's offense on the other hand, shot 54.5 percent overall (18-33) and an even better 9-16 (56.3 percent) on three-pointers. Of the 18 made baskets in the first half, 15 were assisted.

With 3:50 left in the opening half, LCU led by 34 points, having gone on a 17-point run. A 9-4 run from the Mustangs to close out the half sent the two teams into the locker room with the Chaps up by 29.

Proctor kept the momentum on the Lubbock Christian side out of the break, driving down the lane for a dunk just 16 seconds into the half. The lead did now grow or shrink much throughout the final 20 minutes, even though the Mustangs improved their shooting to 44.8 percent.

Lubbock Christian got the lead to its widest point of the game at 38 points with 9:25 remaining in the game thanks to a three-pointer from Hicks, after which Duncan emptied his bench, allowing for Zach Stepp, Joshua Dave and Cade McDowell to play significant minutes as the Chaps closed out the win.

TURNING POINT
Lubbock Christian showed no signs of rust from their 11-day break between games, scoring the first seven points of the game and leading by double-figures at the first media timeout. They only led by single digits once more during the entire game.

 INSIDE THE NUMBERS
The Chaps' overall shooting percentage, (55.9) three-point shooting percentage (55.8) and three-pointers made (17) were all their second-best marks of the season, only behind the win over Oklahoma Panhandle State.
