LUBBOCK, Texas (February 22, 2020) – The Lubbock Christian baseball team scored 12 runs in two games but gave up more than twice that, as the Angelo State offense earned a pair of wins Saturday at Hays Field.
The Chaps (3-10) have hit better this series than they did in their last, scoring 18 runs in the three games, but still don't have a win to show for it as the Rams have outscored them to hold onto their undefeated (13-0) record.
GAME ONE
ASU took an early lead in game one, scoring a run in the top of the first on a single from Aaron Walters. LCU got the run back immediately though, using singles from
George Mendazona,
Luis Navarro and
Jaxon Shirley to score their own run.
The Chaps added two runs in the second, taking the lead for the first time in the game. Singles from
Edgar Hernandez and
Peyton Maddox started the inning, with Hernandez eventually scoring on a balk. Maddox came to the plate on a single from Mendazona before the Chap scoring ended.
A home run from Angelo State slugger Josh Elvir in the top of the third got the two runs back, and the Rams retook the lead after a double from Bradley Mathiowetz and another single from Walters.
Angelo State would go on to score in every inning for the rest of the game, which was only seven innings because of the doubleheader. LCU scored just one more run in the top half of the twin bill, loading the bases with one out in the sixth and pushing across a run with a walk from
Tate Ellison before a strikeout and ground out ended the threat, leading to the final score of 17-4.
GAME TWO
LCU doubled its run output in the nightcap, but eight was again not enough as ASU scored 15 runs, five of which were unearned. The Rams did a lot of early damage, scoring a pair of runs in the first and another six in the second, all off of Chap starter
Aaron Weseman, who took the loss in the game.
Weseman was removed for Cade Acery, who closed out the game with five and a third innings on the mound, but also gave up seven runs.
LCU did not go away quietly in the second game of the doubleheader, chipping away at the Ram lead with a run in the second and two more in the third to cut the deficit to just five. Angelo State responded though, scoring four more times in the fifth, thanks to a Jaxon Hardy single and a three-run homer from Elvir.
The Chaps continued to go to work on offense, and hade their biggest single-inning output of the season with five runs in the fifth, but it was too little, too late. ASU's Mathiowetz hit a three-run bomb of his own in the seventh to cap off the Rams' strong offensive day.
