AUSTIN, Texas (Special) - Lubbock Christian College's Mark Blau threw a seven-hitter in the opener and Texas' Richard Wortham hurled a six-hit shutout in the second game as the Chaps and Longhorns split a non-conference doubleheader 5-1 and 6-0 here Thursday.
Texas moved its record to 47-5 with the split and LCC went to 39-13. The second-game blanking by Wortham marked the first time in 60 straight games the Chaps have failed to score in a game. LCC's win was Texas' second loss in 61 home games.
Blau, raising his season record to 4-4, was spectacular in the opener, giving up only one extra-base hit, aa double, to Terry Pyka. He walked four and struck out a like number.
He got all the bat support he needed from his teammates who pounded Texas starter Jim Gideon for eight hits and all five runs. the loss was Gideon's first after 17 consecutive wins.
LCC opened the scoring in the second when Ken Burton walked, only to be forced at second on Henry Garza's ground ball. Rodney Gardner singled and with runners on first and second, Eddie Gross hit a ground ball to Texas, third baseman Keith Moreland, who made a bad throw to first, allowing two runs to score. David Carter singled home Gross.
Texas came back with one in the second when Rick Bradley singled, Mickey Richenbach walked and Tom Ball singled home Bradley.
LCC tallied single runs in the fourth and seventh, the latter on Gross' booming home run far over the fence in left.
Wortham held the Chaps to only six hits in the second game and LCC starter Will McCauley was racked for eight and all six runs.
Texas scored once in the second without benefit of a hit. A hit batsman, stolen base and a passed ball allowed the run to score In the fourth, Bobby Clark doubled and later scored on a wild pitch.
The two teams meet again tomorrow in another doubleheader. On the mound for LCC will be John Harris and Rodney Cox and Texas hurlers will be Burley and Martin Flores.
