Lady Chaps Upset No. 12 Patriots On the Road

LCU Earns First Win Over Ranked Program in School History

DALLAS, Texas (October 2, 2021) – The Lubbock Christian women's soccer team started off the month of October with a bang, shutting out No. 12 Dallas Baptist 1-0 on Saturday at Patriot Soccer Field.

The win was the first over a ranked team in program history for the Lady Chaps, who are now 6-0-2 on the year and 3-0-1 in Lone Star Conference play. LCU has now won three straight games and sits alone atop the LSC standings with 10 total points.

"That was the grittiest performance I have seen as a coach," head coach Alex Denning said, "and I'm so proud of my girls for their commitment to each other. Everyone left everything out on the field today."

Defense was key in the win, as it has been all season for the Lady Chaps. It is the fourth shutout of the season for the Lady Chaps, but their first in a road game. They have now lowered their season goals against average to a paltry .50, even though the Patriots got off 26 total shots in the game.

More than half (15) of the shots came in the first 45 minutes of play, when Dallas Baptist controlled the ball and created a number of offensive chances. The shots on goal started in the ninth minute, when Hannah Wise was forced to make her first two saves.

Wise would end up making three more saves before halftime and those, along with a ball cleared out by Kaylen McNatt at the 25:26 mark, kept the Patriots scoreless heading into the break.

LCU had a few chances throughout the first half as well, including a breakaway by Makenna Pate in the 25th minute, when her shot sailed just high. They also earned three corner kicks but went into halftime scoreless.

Not long into the second half though, the Lady Chaps broke through with what ended up being the decisive blow in the match.

The play started with Shadiana Haney taking a free kick just over ten yards into the LCU offensive half. Her kick sailed into the box where it bounced once, over the head of a DBU defender to the feet of Allison Scott. She took one touch to settle it before passing into the middle to Julie Shahi, who went around the DBU goalkeeper and scored with her left foot.

The goal came just over three minutes into the second half, leaving ample time for the Patriots to equalize, but LCU's defense made sure that goal never came. DBU got off only nine shots in the second half, only four of which were on goal.

Wise cleaned up all four of those chances, giving her a season-high nine saves in the match overall. The Midlothian native has allowed just one goal in more than 400 minutes of action this season, posting a save percentage of .950.

"Hannah definitely has to be singled out with her performance," Denning noted. "She absolutely stood on her head today in goal!"

Despite the 26 shots, it was the first time this season that DBU was shut out. It was also the Patriots' first loss ever in two seasons of Lone Star Conference play and only LCU's second win over DBU since the two teams began meeting in 2013.

The road will not get any easier for the Lady Chaps though, as they will go on the road next for another test against a ranked foe, taking on No. 21 West Texas A&M at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Canyon, Texas.
