CANYON, Texas (October 6, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University fell 4-0 to West Texas A&M on Wednesday night for their first loss of the season.
The Lady Chaps are now 6-1-2 on the year and 3-1-1 in Lone Star Conference play. With St. Edward's and Angelo State winning on Wednesday night, they are now in a three-way tie for first place in the league.
West Texas A&M was aggressive on offense to start the match, scoring the opening goal at the 4:44 mark. Then in the ninth minute,
Shadiana Haney committed a foul that lead to a penalty kick for the Lady Buffs, which Alex Jurado converted for a 2-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the match.
WT took five more shots before the game was 20 minutes old, two more of which were on goal, but
Hannah Wise was there to stop them. She ended up with four saves in the first half and eight in the game overall.
Makenna Pate took the first LCU shot in the 21
st minute and missed wide right.
Madison Mayben took another shot a minute later that was blocked for LCU's first corner, but the Lady Chaps were unable to put anything on frame and went into halftime still down by two.
Pate attempted another shot early in the second half, but WT quickly added to their lead with a second goal from Hannah Kelley-Lusk. LCU's first shot on goal of the match came in the 64
th minute, but
Lindsey Elison's attempt was saved by WT goalkeeper Reagan Heelan.
The final West Texas A&M goal came in the 65
th minute and was again from Kelley-Lusk, giving her a hat trick in the contest. She leads the LSC with 12 goals this season.
Maddie Hoel put another shot on goal in the 69
th minute and
Allison Scott attempted a shot a minute later, but the Lady Buff defense held on for the shutout.
Lubbock Christian will return home now, where they will host Texas A&M-Commerce at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
