Jenna Lyons and held No.15 UT Tyler, the nation's only unbeaten team, to their lowest attack percentage since Nov. 16, 2019 (vs. Texas A&M-Commerce), but the Patriots claimed a pair of 25-23 in the final two sets to sneak out of the Rip Griffin Center with a 3-1 win Friday night during LCU's "Play For The Cure Night." UTT entered the match ranked eighth nationally in hitting percentage (.271), but LCU held them to a .117 mark after producing 14.0 team blocks, with
Hannah Froeschl posting a career-high eight blocks. On the Patriots side, they also supplied defense at the net with 12.0 blocks and eight from Maiya Pena, who matched a career high with her eight blocks (four solo) and just missed a double-double (9 kills, 8 blocks). They did receive a double-double from Mikayla Ware, who had 17 kills and 17 digs.
Jalee Sims supplied LCU a double-double with 34 assists and 18 digs. The two teams combined for 176 digs (92 by UTT), with Savannah Guzman posting a match-high 33 and LCU's
Kendall Mahaney leading the team with 21 digs (she also had four aces).
How It Happened
Set One:
Five of UTT's opening eight points resulted from LCU errors, as they had an 8-2 run to start the match. LCU fell behind 13-4 before attempting a rally with a 5-0 run spearheaded by a trio of kills from Froeschl. Leading 15-11, the Patriots cruised to the set win with a 10-1 run to close the set for a 25-12 set win. Froeschl led LCU in the set with five kills and two blocks. The Patriots, who produced a 15-7 advantage in kills, hit .314 for the set.
Set Two:
The second set was tied 7-7 until consecutive kills by LCU's
Sage Chain sparked eight consecutive LCU points and a 13-1 run. LCU closed the set on a 5-2 run, as LCU had an 18-5 scoring advantage from the 7-7 mark for a 25-12 set win to even the match 1-1. LCU held the Pats to a -.111 attack percentage, as they had seven kills and 11 errors on 36 attempts. LCU had a 12-7 kill advantage, with
Aaliyah Gray (4) and Lyons (3) combining for seven kills.
Set Three:
A trio of LCU attack errors led to UTT opening the third set on a 7-1 run and LCU was playing catch-up from then on in the set. Trailing as much as 11-4, LCU used a 6-2 and an 8-3 run to storm back. The 8-3 run was capped by consecutive serving aces by Mahaney to tie the set 23-23. A key timeout was called by UTT, as the Patriots responded with kills from Evelyn Torres Hannah Callison to take the set 25-23. The set was an offensive duel between Lyons and Ware, as the two led their teams with six kills each in the set. Mahaney had three aces in the set.
Set Four:
The fourth was set was tightly played throughout, as their was six lead changes and the score tied on 12 occasions. UTT led 7-4 before LCU went on a 7-2 run gave LCU an 11-9 advantage. Trailing 19-16, LCU used a pair of kills from Lyons to go on a 4-0 run to take a 20-19 lead. The teams traded points until UTT, trailing 23-22, closed the match on a 3-0 run to escape Lubbock with the win in four sets. Ware had another six-kill set to lead UTT in the frame. Lyons led LCU with five.
