First-Half Goal Beats LCU

Lady Chaps Put Four Shots on Goal in Loss

LUBBOCK, Texas (October 30, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University allowed just one goal for the second-straight game but was unable to find the back of the net themselves, falling 1-0 on Saturday at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex.

The game-winner came in the 23rd minute when the Hilltoppers earned back-to-back corner kicks and converted on the second. Caitlyn Gonzalez sent in a ball past the back post and Katie Gay was waiting there to put it past LCU goalkeeper Hannah Wise for her sixth score of the year.

Lubbock Christian is now 7-6-2 on the year and 4-6-1 in Lone Star Conference play.

The goal-scoring play by St. Edward's was one of only three shots on goal they had all day, while the Lady Chaps had four, despite trailing in total shots 16-9. LCU's first shot on goal of the day came in the 19th minute from Kenley Blevins, and Madi Fuller tried to score an equalizer with 11 seconds left before halftime, but both were saved by SEU goalkeeper Abby Carlson.

In the second half, LCU's offense was much more in control and created a lot more scoring opportunities but just couldn't finish. Maddie Hoel took three shots in the first 15 minutes of the half, including one rocket from 25 yards out that just sailed over the crossbar in the 61st minutes.

Lindsey Elison also had a shot on goal seven minutes into the half that was saved. Later in the half, a pass was played ahead to Carla Martinez, but she could not take a good swing at the bouncing ball and Carlson steered it out of danger.

The best chance for a Lubbock Christian equalizer came in the 83rd minute, when a perfect through ball was played into the box for Stephanie McClung. She took a good shot, but Carlson had come out to meet her, sliding to stop the shot on goal with her body.

This is the third time in the last four games LCU's defense has allowed just one goal, and their goals against average for the season is still 1.07, which is the fifth-best mark in the conference. The goal by the Hilltoppers was just the 16th allowed this season by the Lady Chap defense. The fewest goals allowed in a single season by an LCU team is 17 in 2017, when they played 18 total games.

Lubbock Christian will look to get back in the win column in their final road game of the regular season this Wednesday. The Lady Chaps will take on Eastern New Mexico at 7 p.m. MT / 7 p.m. CT at Greyhound Stadium.
