Highlights
Lubbock Christian's run in the Lone Star Conference Championship ended in the semifinals, as the No.3-seeded Lady Chaparrals fell in straight sets to No.10 St. Edward's. The Hilltoppers had a 53-36 advantage over the Lady Chaps in the kills, led by 15 kills from Caroline Swan. They also had 12 kills from Kaitlyn Krafka, who completed a double-double with 22 digs. She had one of two of the Double-double performances for SEU, who also received 43 assists and 16 digs from Emily Tran. The Lady Chaps received 11 kills and five blocks in the loss from
Sage Chain. She was LCU's lone player with at least 10 kills.
Jalee Sims had a double-double in the loss, posting 26 assists and 17 digs.
How It Happened
Set One:
Each set was a near carbon copy, with SEU jumping out to big leads and LCU battling back. In the first set, SEU used a 5-0 and 6-0 run to burst out to a 16-6 advantage. LCU never had consecutive points tallied until trailing 19-8, they built a 9-1 run, which included an 8-0 scoring surge behind two kills each from
Sage Chain and
Sage Post and a pair of blocks from Chain. An additional kill by Chain and a Hilltoppers error allowed LCU to cut the deficit to 21-19. The mark was as close as LCU would get, falling 25-21 in the set. Each team had 15 kills in the set. LCU dropped the set despite Chain producing six kills and three blocks in the frame.
Set Two:
LCU led the second set, with a kill by
Hannah Froeschl providing an 11-7 lead, but then things went downhill for the Lady Chaps. SEU's Maya Smalls had a kill and a pair of blocks on three consecutive Hilltoppers points to spur an 8-1 run for a 15-12 SEU lead. They used a 5-1 run to gain distance before claiming the set 25-21 for a 2-0 match lead. Smalls finished with four kills and two blocks in the set, while teammate Swan had five kills in the set. Chain led LCU with four kills in the set. SEU had a 19-8 kill advantage and 33-24 dig advantage in the set.
Set Three:
SEU scored the first six points of the third set and built a 10-2 and 12-3 advantage early. The Hilltoppers led 19-8 before LCU rallied with a 13-4 run to trail 23-21. The two teams traded points from there, as SEU clinched the match with a 25-22 set win. SEU had a 20-12 kill advantage in the set, with Swan producing seven kills in the set.
Aaliyah Gray came alive with five kills in the set for LCU.
