LUBBOCK, Texas (February 11, 2021) – No.1 Lubbock Christian University held Western New Mexico to 16.7% shooting from the field, while receiving 16 points and nine rebounds from
Emma Middleton, and LCU blistered the Mustangs 80-23 to tie West Texas A&M (Jan. 9, 1987-Dec. 6, 1991) for having the second-longest home win streak in NCAA Division II women's basketball history. LCU's win Thursday inside Rip Griffin Center was their 85
th consecutive home win, which actively leads all levels of NCAA women's basketball.
WNMU was shooting 11.7% in the game before making their final three field goal attempts over the final 2:07 of the game to finish 9-of-54 (16.7%) from the field. It was the worst shooting performance by an LCU opponent since Texas A&M International shot 12.5% in Lubbock on Feb. 9, 2019. WNMU's total of 23 points was the lowest offensive output by an LCU opponent since TAMIU was held to 19 points in the same 2019 referenced contest.
LCU wasted no time putting the game away early, opening the contest on a 17-0 run. The Lady Chaps led 25-3 at the close of the first quarter, with Middleton (9) and
Juliana Robertson (8) combining for 17 points in the quarter (they had 15 of the points during LCU's 17-0 run).
WNMU was held to six points in the first half, with three points in each quarter and two field goals in the entire half. The Mustangs were 2-of-23 (8.7%) in the opening half, as LCU led the half 37-6. Robertson and
Channing Cunyus each had 10 points in the half for LCU.
Momentum never switched in the second half. WNMU missed their first eight shot attempts, while LCU opened the second half on a 10-0 run (combined for an 18-0 run as LCU closed the first half on an 8-0 run). LCU went on to outscore WNMU 22-5 in the third quarter.
LCU received scoring production from 10 different players in the second half. Freshman
Lara Mason led LCU in the second half with eight points (finished with a career-high eight points), as LCU closed the contest outscoring WNMU 21-12 in the fourth quarter.
WNMU (1-2), shooting 35.7% in the fourth quarter (5/14), finished the game 3-of-22 (13.6%) from three-point range. Jen Padilla led the Mustangs in scoring with five points.
The Lady Chaps dressed 14 players and 12 of the players contributed offensively. No Lady Chaps member played more than 21 minutes and every player played at least five minutes. None of the Lady Chaps had below a plus/minus of +10. Middleton was 6-of-12 from the field, with nine rebounds, four assists and +39 plus/minus in 18 minutes of playing time. Robertson finished with 12 points (5-of-7 shooting) and seven rebounds.
LCU (10-0) outscored WNMU 42-6 in the paint, as LCU was 23-of-39 (59%) from inside the arc. They also had a season-high 46 rebounds. LCU was 86.4% (19-of-22) from the free-throw line, marking the third consecutive game in which LCU shot at least 83.3% from the free-throw line. They have not missed more than three free-throw attempts in any of their 10 games this season (averaging 13.6 attempts per game and shooting 83.8% as a team this season).
TURNING POINT
WNMU missed their first seven shots over the first 5:36 of the game. Meanwhile, LCU opened the game making six of their first nine shot attempts. LCU opened the game on a 29-4 run, putting the game out of reach early.

Beginning in the first quarter, WNMU went a stretch of 18:32 in which they were 1-of-23 (4.3%) from the field. The span included two sequences in which they missed 11 consecutive field goal attempts.

The Lady Chaps remain home and host Western New Mexico at 5:30 p.m. Friday to complete their two-game non-conference series. If LCU wins the contest, they will extend their home win streak to 86 consecutive games, marking the second-longest in NCAA Division II women's basketball history. The record is 87 held by Nebraska-Kearney (Jan. 31, 1995-Nov. 24, 2001).
