LUBBOCK, Texas (February 12, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University's men's basketball team reached triple digits for just the sixth time in head coach
Todd Duncan's tenure, out-pacing Western New Mexico by a full 40 points (101-61) on Friday.
Â
The last time the Chaparrals (14-0, 12-0 LSC) scored at least 100 points was Jan. 4, 2019, when they won 104-98 against Randall behind
Brennen Fowler's program record 47 points.
Â
LCU reached the threshold behind four players in double figures.
Parker Hicks led all scorers with 22 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including a 4-of-5 showing from behind the arc.
Lloyd Daniels added in 18 points, while
Rowan Mackenzie added in 13 and
Ben Janssan chipped in a career-high 11 points.
Â
A game that featured 101 Chaparral points started about how one would expect – with three straight LCU buckets. It was a surprisingly low-scoring first four minutes though, and at the first media timeout, the Chaps were only up 7-2.
Â
Ty Caswell hit a three-pointer out of the timeout though, sparking an 18-2 Lubbock Christian run that put them up by 21 points with 10:46 left in the first half. Western New Mexico was able to keep within 20 for most of the second half, but in the last 33 seconds Daniels hit a jumper and then beat the buzzer with a three-pointer, leaving LCU up 25 heading into the locker room.
Â
The Chaps opened the second half the exact same way they started the first – with seven unanswered points – increasing the lead to 32 points.
Â
Another run, this time of eight straight points, at the 11:29 mark in the second half put the Chaps up by 38, and they opened it up to 41 points at the 8:42 mark with a three-pointer from Daniels.
Â
Three-pointers accounted for nearly half (48) of Lubbock Christian's points in the win, as they hit 16-of-29 from behind the arc. Hicks led the way with four three-pointers, while Mackenzie, Daniels and
Jalen Brattain all hit three apiece.
Â
It was mostly reserve players in for LCU in the final five minutes, but the offensive onslaught did not let up. Janssan hit three-jumpers as the game wound down,
Cade McDowell put in a layup, and with 20 seconds left on the clock it was
Zach Barsalou making his first collegiate basket and pushing the Chaps into triple digits.
Â
TURNING POINT
Lubbock Christian led wire-to-wire in this one, quickly jumping out in front with a 7-0 run to start the game and distancing themselves with an 18-2 run out of the first media timeout.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Parker Hicks led the Chaps in scoring with 22 points. It was the fifth time this season for him to lead the team in points and his fifth time to reach the 20-point mark as well.
Â
