LUBBOCK, Texas (February 23, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University recorded its most shots in a game since Sept. 14, 2019, taking down Oklahoma Christian 3-0 at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex on Tuesday.
The win moved the Chaps to 2-0 to start the season for the second straight year and the sixth time in program history.
Juan Jose Valdez Lopez had the first real scoring opportunity for LCU, putting a shot on goal in the 13
th minute that was saved by OC goalkeeper Anthony Trabichet. Just over 10 minutes later, the Chaps had another great scoring opportunity, but Trabichet committed a foul and was assessed a yellow card, giving the LCU a penalty kick.
Fernando Flores took the PK for the Chaps and beat OC's goalkeeper to the right side, putting LCU on top 1-0.
OC went hard on the attack after giving up the goal and put their first two shots on goal, but both were saved by
Braxton Thorne. The Lubbock native faced eight total shots in the game, four of which were on goal. He earned his second shutout of the year in the win, matching last year's total already. He had six as a freshman, giving him a career total of 10.
Agustine Contreras Orsi,
Tariq Bakkali and
Hector Rodriguez-Cabo all took shots throughout the rest of the half, but none were on target. Bakkalli actually led the team in shots with five, and Rodriguez-Cabo added in four.
It took less than five minutes for LCU's lead to double in the second half, as Contreras-Orsi blasted a shot into the back of the net. The goal was the first of the Uruguay native's LCU career, and the assist came from Valdez Lopez, who claimed the first point of his own LCU career.
Trabichet was again called for a foul in the box in the 75
th minute, giving Flores another opportunity to shoot from the penalty spot. This time the OC keeper made the save though, keeping the score 2-0 with 15 minutes to play.
Flores did score again though, finding the back of the net in the 83
rd minute. Bakkali passed the ball through to Flores who beat on final Eagle defender and the keeper for the third and final goal of the game.
The goals from Flores were the 13
th and 14
th of his LCU career, and the performance marked his fourth two-goal performance. He also had two goals in last year's win over Oklahoma Christian.
Lubbock Christian's defense really locked in the second half of the game, allowing no shots on goal. They have allowed just seven shots on goal in their first two games of the season combined.
The Chaps will now look ahead to a road matchup against LSC Preseason No. 1 Midwestern State, who they will take on at 5:30 p.m. on March 3 at Stang Park in Wichita Falls, Texas.
