SAN ANGELO, Texas (February 27, 2021) – Three goals were scored in a span of 1:02 in the second half, but two of them came from Angelo State, allowing the Belles to push past Lubbock Christian University 3-1 on Saturday at the ASU Soccer Field.
The Lady Chaps dropped to 1-1 on the year and in Lone Star Conference play with the loss, but they will get another shot at the Belles (2-0, 2-0) quickly. ASU will visit LCU for a matchup at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex with a start time of 6 p.m. on March 3.
It was a defensive battle for the first 45 minutes of play, as each team was able to muster just one shot on goal before halftime. Lubbock Christian had their chance first, as
Allison Scott fired in the 18
th minute, but it was saved by ASU keeper Casey Crawford.
Lubbock native Avery McNeme had the only scoring attempt for the Belles in the opening period with a shot on goal in the 30
th minute, but it was saved by
Hannah Wise. Wise ended up making six total saves in the contest.
The second half of the game was markedly different almost right away, as Angelo State took three shots, two of which were on goal, in the first eight minutes of play.
But it was Lubbock Christian who opened the scoring, taking advantage of a bad pass by an ASU defender and a misplay by their goalkeeper that allowed sophomore
Celia Duarte a wide-open look at the goal, which she took advantage of.
The goal was the eighth of her young career and gives her a team-leading four points so far this season.
Stephanie McClung had the assist on the score, giving the Plano native the first point of her collegiate career.
Angelo State responded quickly though, scoring less than a minute later off the cleat of McNeme. They then took the lead just 18 seconds later on a blast from 25 yards out by Belle Cindy Rodriguez.
In the 73
rd minute, ASU had another shot on goal that was saved by Wise, but she took a serious hit in the process, causing play to be stopped for a short time. The senior stayed in though, and made another save just a minute later.
The Belles were able to add to their lead in the 77
th minute, however, with a goal from Madison Stokes.
Lubbock Christian did have a pair of corner kicks in the game's closing minutes, but they were unable to create any scoring opportunities before the final horn.
