Chaps Fall Late in Regular Season Finale

Falcons Score Four Unanswered Goals

LUBBOCK, Texas (April 6, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University took an early 3-0 lead but allowed four unanswered goals in the second half to lose 4-3 against UT Permian Basin on Tuesday at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex.

LCU started the game off on the attack early and found the back of the net just two minutes in. Hector Rodriguez-Cabo forced the issue, putting a cross right across the mouth of the goal, and it bounced off a Falcon defender and into the goal.

Luca Hollenstein put a shot on goal in the 10th minute and Tariq Bakkali had one in the 33rd minute, but neither converted. Meanwhile, UTPB was held without a shot on goal for the first 45 minutes and the two teams entered the break with LCU leading 1-0.

Again in the second half though, Lubbock Christian applied the pressure offensively early, this time finding the back of the net just 14 seconds into the second half. Bakkali netted the goal, scoring for the second time this season. Hollenstein and Rodriguez-Cabo assisted.

Matias Pereira put the first UTPB shot on goal just four minute later, but it was saved by LCU goalkeeper Ben Pelz.

The Chaps added their third and final score of the game in the 57th minute after a handball in the box allowed them to take a penalty. Fernando Flores took and converted the attempt, scoring his four goal of the year. He finishes the season with 11 points and now has 42 in his career, which is the second-most in Chaparral soccer history.

UT Permian Basin began their comeback in the 67th minute, finally breaking onto the scoreboard with a goal from Brandon Bernal.

The Falcons then scored the next two goals just a minute and a half apart from one another, finding the back of the net in the 76th and 77th minutes to tie the game at 3-3.

Both teams had one final chance to take a lead before regulation ended, but each keeper made a save in the final five minutes to force overtime.

The Chaps did not have a shot attempt in overtime, and after a foul was called on the Chaps in the 94th minute, UTPB used the free kick to score the golden goal

The loss ended the Chap spring 2021 season with a 4-5 record, finishing seventh in the Lone Star Conference.
