LUBBOCK, Texas (April 6, 2021) – Hosting the Lone Star Conference Quarterfinal on Tuesday night at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex, Lubbock Christian University lost 2-1 to St. Edward's to end their spring 2021 season.
The Lady Chaps actually out-shot the Hilltoppers 22 to 14 in the loss and had a season-high 10 shots on goal.
LCU put the first shot on goal of the game with an attempt from, but it was St. Edward's controlling the game offensively early on. The Hilltoppers put their first shot on goal in the 11
th minute, had another in the 14
th minute and broke through for the game's first goal in the 19
th minute of play.
Lubbock Christian fought back after the early goal both on defense – not allowing another SEU shot on goal for the remainder of the first half – and on offense – putting five shots on goal themselves. Their best chance to even the score was in the 42
nd minute when
Allison Scott and
Celia Duarte had back-to-back shot on goal, but both were saved.
It took just two and a half minutes in the second half for the Lady Chaps to break through though.
Makenna Pate controlled a bouncing ball and beat one Hilltopper defender but had her shot attempt blocked by the St. Edward's keeper. The ball bounced right over to freshman
Lindsey Elison, who pushed it into the back of the net.
The goal was Elison's second of her LCU career and made her the just the third LCU player (along with Scott and Duarte) to score multiple goals during the spring 2021 season.
Lubbock Christian continued to press on offense, taking another five shots – including one on goal by Pate – in the next five minutes of play, but they were unable to take the lead. SEU had shots on goal in the 52
nd and 64
th minutes, but both were saved by LCU goalkeeper
Hannah Wise.
The teams remained knotted at 1-1 and seemed destined for overtime until the 85
th minute, when SEU's Wren Blanchette attempted a shot that was blocked out of bounds by an LCU defender to give the Hilltoppers a corner kick. They converted, with Sarah Preston hitting home the eventual game-winner.
LCU did not give up after the goal, taking four shots and putting one on goal in the final two minutes of play, but the Hilltoppers did enough defensively to hold on to the win.
Lubbock Christian ends the spring 2021 season with a 5-4 overall record after finishing second in their Lone Star Conference division. The Lady Chaps are now 84-54-13 all-time under head coach
Alex Denning.
