LAKEWOOD, Colorado (September 17, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University played into overtime for the first time this season on Friday, fighting to a 1-1 tie with Colorado Christian at Trailblazer Stadium.
The tie was the Lady Chaps' first since Nov. 12, 2019, when they fought to a 0-0 draw with Angelo State in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament before advancing from the game on penalty kicks. LCU remains undefeated on the season with a 3-0-1 record.
Lubbock Christian had a 19-11 advantage in shots (8-6 in shots on goal) during the match, and they didn't allow any shots on goal during the two overtime periods.
The Lady Chaps were aggressive early on, taking three shots in the first 10 minutes before
Makenna Pate put the first shot on goal in the 22
nd minute. Another minute later, Pate earned LCU a corner kick.
Malena Watzlawik took the corner and sent in a perfect cross, which
Allison Scott headed down, past the Cougar goalkeeper to give the Lady Chaps the lead.
Two more shots on goal came for Lubbock Christian in the first half, from Pate and
Julie Shahi, as they looked to double their lead. Colorado Christian, meanwhile, was held at bay by the Lady Chap defense, and CCU did not put a shot on goal until the 44:41 mark.
The Cougars were able to put together better offensive chances after the break, taking two shots on goal in the 56
th minute before finally breaking through in the 66
th minute with a goal from Capri Dewing.
Although there was more than 20 minutes left in regulation when CCU tied thing up, each team only had one shot on goal apiece, with Pate taking LCU's in the 90
th minute.
Both overtime periods were dominated by the Lady Chaps. In the first, they took three shots, one of which was on goal, and earned three corner kicks, but were still unable to convert. Scott had another shot on goal in the second overtime period as well, but Keeley Kroogenberg stopped both attempts. Meanwhile, LCU's back line did not allow a shot on goal in the final 30 minutes of play.
Pate and Scott led the LCU offense with six shots apiece, and four of Pate's were on target.
The tie with Colorado Christian wraps up non-conference play for Lubbock Christian, who will now turn its attention toward the Lone Star Conference. League play for the Lady Chaps begins at home on Wednesday, when they take on Oklahoma Christian at 5 p.m. at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex.
