LUBBOCK, Texas (September 29, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University used a pair of first half goals and a strong defensive effort to take down UT Permian 2-0 on Wednesday night at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex.
It was a game full of offensive opportunities for the Lady Chaps, who improved to 5-0-2 (2-0-1 LSC) and devoid of them for the Falcons, who fall to 1-7-0 (0-3-0) on the season. LCU took a season-high 26 shots during the game, 10 of which were on goal. The last time the Lady Chaps took more than 26 shots in a game was November 2, 2019, when they had 30 in a game that was also played against UT Permian Basin.
UTPB on the other hand, took just five shots in the contest, only one of which forced
Hannah Wise to make a save. The five shots allowed was the fewest this season as well. The shutout was Lubbock Christian's third of the season and they lowered their goals against average to .57.
The Lady Chaps applied quite a bit of early pressure, with
Julie Shahi,
Arely Jimenez and
Kenley Blevins all putting shots on goal in the first 20 minutes, not to mention several more off-target shots by
Maddie Hoel and
Celia Duarte.
It was the 24
th minute when Lubbock Christian broke through and took the lead, after a
Kaylen McNatt shot was pushed high by the UTPB keeper, earning a corner kick. Malena Watzalwik took the corner and served in a perfect ball before a confusing sequence occurred.
The cross found Scott's head and was put on frame, but the shot was pushed out by the Falcon keeper. Another header was pushed on goal by Duarte and cleared out by a UTPB defender, with play continuing for about 20 seconds before the referee blew play dead, awarding the goal to Duarte.
It is her second straight game with a goal for two total this season and the 12
th of her Lubbock Christian career.
Just before halftime the Lady Chaps doubled their lead thanks to midfielder
Allison Scott.
Giorgia Terzoni started the scoring effort by passing out wide to
Malena Watzlawik, who sent in a high, arcing cross. Scott got underneath it and headed it on frame, just over the outstretched hands of the UTPB keeper.
Scott is now tied for the team lead with four goals this season and she leads the team with 10 total points. It was the 27
th goal of her career and her 70
th and 71
st point.
UTPB's only shot on goal of the game came four minutes into the second half, but LCU was in control for the majority of the period. The Lady Chaps had 12 more shots, four of which came from Scott.
Despite the abundance of chances, Lubbock Christian did not find the back of the net for a third time. The defense rarely allowed UT Permian Basin out of their own defensive half though, and the Lady Chaps cruised to their fifth victory of the year.
The three points in the conference standings gives LCU a total of seven for the year, which puts them in sole possession of second place. They will be on the road to take on the first place team, Dallas Baptist, this Saturday at 1 p.m. at Patriot Soccer Field.
