LUBBOCK, Texas (September 3, 2021) – It wasn't the start they wanted, and the Lubbock Christian men's soccer team will need a short memory as they try and take down Adams State on Saturday. LCU second chance to get a win in the Centennial State before they come home kicks off at 1 p.m. CT.
CHAPARRAL NEWS AND NOTES
- Fernando Flores scored the only Lubbock Christian goal in Thursday's season-opener. It was the 17th goal of his collegiate career and gives him 44 career points. He surpassed Nick Gorrie (42) in that category and is now in sole possession of second place in the program record books, although he is well behind LCU record holder Billy Forbes and his 93 career points (40g, 13a).
- Tomas Casas was the only Chaparral field player to stay on the field for all 90 minutes of the first game of the season, although Ivan Muanze-Bengono was only off the field for a minute of playing time.
- Lubbock Christian dropped their last two road games of the spring 2021 season and was 2-3 in away games overall. A win on Saturday would be their first on the road since March 16, 2021, when they beat Texas A&M-International 1-0 behind a goal from Pablo Galietero Diez and a shutout from the LCU defense, which limited the Dustdevils to just three shots on goal.
- The Chaps and Grizzlies have met three times previously, with two of the meetings coming in Colorado. LCU has won all there in the all-time series so far, including a 1-0 win in the last meeting in Lubbock in 2017. ASU has only scored one goal against the Chaps in the three meetings, and it came 37 seconds into the first matchup between the teams in 2015.
- Eight newcomers made their Lubbock Christian debut during the season-opener, along with 10 returners. The starting lineup for that matchup featured seven veterans and four newcomers.
- Players on the LCU roster represent 14 different countries from around the world
SCOUTING THE GRIZZLIES
- Saturday's game is the 2021 season-opener for Adams State. They played one alumni match and a pair of scrimmages against NJCAA opponents, but this will be their first official game
- The Grizzlies went 0-6 in the adjusted spring 2021 season. Their last win in men's soccer came on October 6, 2019 against UCCS, who they topped 3-2 despite being out-shot 19-8.
- Chaparral fans might recognized the head coach of the ASU program, as Brett Bentley previously was an assistant coach at Lubbock Christian. Bentley coached the Grizzlies in 2017, left to work as an assistant at the University of Evansville, and returned to coach at Adams State again prior to the start of the spring 2021 season.
- Eduardo Cardenas and Benjiman Rogers were the only two players to score goals for the Grizzlies last season, but both return to the roster for this campaign.
- Adams State allowed an average of three goals per game last season, including a season-high seven in their March 21 matchup against CSU-Pueblo.
