LCU Turns Patriots Inside Out

Ashton Duncan's Six Three-Pointers and Juliana Robertson's 18-Rebounds Provided LCU With Balance Production in Win

TYLER, Texas (January 15, 2022) – The University of Texas at Tyler, entering the game ranked eighth in NCAA Division II in field goal shooting, was held to 28% shooting from the field by No.2 Lubbock Christian University. The Lady Chaparrals received 20 points from Ashton Duncan, who drained six three-pointers, and Juliana Robertson posted a career-high 18 rebounds, as they defeated UT Tyler 57-37 in Lone Star Conference play Saturday inside Patriot Center.

Robertson's 18 rebounds were the most by a Lady Chaps member since Kellyn Schneider posted 18 rebounds on the exact date in 2015 against Rogers State. The rebound performance shared by Robertson and Schneider are the highest rebound marks by a Lady Chap since Candace Clenney had 19 against Science & Arts of Oklahoma on Feb. 23, 2006. LCU also received a career-high nine rebounds from Channing Cunyus, as Cunyus and Robertson combined for 27 of LCU's 39 rebounds. LCU had a 39-25 advantage in rebounds, matching a season high for rebounding advantage (14).

Duncan, who also six three-pointers at UT Tyler on Feb. 1, 2020, got off to a hot start early in the game. LCU, missing their first three shot attempts of the game, made four straight three-pointers. Laynee Burr hit the first three-pointer for LCU, nearly three minutes into the game, had Duncan follow with three consecutive three-pointers. Duncan was 4-of-6 from long range in the quarter and her second three-pointer was the game's fifth and final lead change. The shot also led to a 14-0 LCU run, with the first 11 points closing out the first quarter scoring for a 17-8 LCU lead.

Allie Schulte opened the second quarter with a three-pointer and it was the final bucket of the 14-0 run. Robertson had back-to-back buckets to give LCU a 6-0 run, which combined (with the 14-0 run) to give LCU a 20-2 run and a 26-10 lead with 5:50 left in the opening half. Duncan closed out the half with two more three-pointers and was 6-of-8 from downtown in the half to help LCU take a 32-18 lead into the locker room.

LCU was 12-of-21 (57.1%) from the field in the half and 8-of-11 from three-point range. Duncan had 18 points in the first half, while Robertson had eight rebounds.

The Lady Chaps, who averaged scoring their first point 3:04 (three minutes and four seconds) into the quarters Saturday, did not score a point for the opening 5:06 of the third quarter. Maci Maddox drained a three-pointer to end a 7:18 scoreless stretch. The field goal was LCU's only points during a Patriots 9-3 run, which cut LCU's lead to 35-24 with 4:34 remaining in the third quarter. Cunyus had five points in the quarter and all were tallied in the final 4:15 of the quarter, as LCU closed the quarter on a 9-2 run for a 44-26 lead.

An 8-2 UTT surge pulled the Pats within 13 (48-35) with 5:54 left in the contest, but UTT closed the game making one of their last nine field goal attempts. Robertson had five points and five rebounds in the quarter, which gave her 10 rebounds in the half. Cunyus led LCU with six points in the quarter and also had 11 points in the half off 4-of-4 shooting from the field.

Cunyus finished with 13 points in the game off 5-of-6 shooting, added nine rebounds and led LCU with a +18 plus/minus rating. She joined Duncan in double-figures in points, as Duncan was 6-of-12 from three-point range in the contest. The performance gives her 229 career three-pointers and she surpassed 900 career points (909).

The Patriots (9-4, 2-2) lost despite nine turnovers, which is the fewest total by a Lady Chaps opponent since Texas A&M-Commerce had seven against the Lady Chaps on Feb. 1, 2020. Entering the game ranked eighth nationally in field goal percentage (46.8%), the Patriots were 14-of-50 (28%) from the field. Lovisa Hevinder led the Patriots with 12 points and Liah Davis added 11 points.

The Lady Chaps improved to 14-3 overall on the season and 3-2 in Lone Star Conference play with the victory. They also moved to 4-0 all-time against UT Tyler and all four meetings have been in Tyler.

TURNING POINT
For a stretch of 14:07 (last 6:19 of the first quarter and the first 7:48 of the second quarter), LCU was 12-of-15 (80%) from the field and they were 8-of-9 (88.9%) from three-point range. They made six consecutive field goal attempts in a 6:37 stretch of the second quarter. Overall during the 14:07 span, LCU out-scored UTT 32-13, with 18 of LCU's points from Ashton Duncan.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
The game was Ashton Duncan's sixth game of her LCU career in which she made at least six three pointers (two have been tallied against UTT). It marks her second this season and four of the six performances have been on the road. Her career high is eight three-pointers (Dec. 11, 2020 vs. St. Mary's). LCU's all-time leader in three-point field goals is Kelsey Hoppel (272 from 2011-16) and Duncan's six performances of making at least six three-pointers in a game matches Hoppel, who had six games of at least six three-pointers in her career.
