Chaps record second straight shutout in win over Patriots

Tom Miles records fifth shutout of the season

LUBBOCK, Texas - Another huge night in goal for Tom Miles and a first half goal from Pablo Galietero Diez pushed the Chaps to their second straight conference win, knocking off UT Tyler 1-0 on Saturday, Oct. 15.

The Patriots (5-5-2, 0-4-1 LSC) came out firing, with Bryan Rivas-Guzman firing a shot at the net in the fourth minute, but Tom Miles was in position to make the save.

In the 13th minute, Sergio Sola had a chance to put UT Tyler ahead, but Madden Montgomery slid in to stop the ball and keep the contest scoreless.

In the 28th minute, Lubbock Christian (6-5-3, 3-1-1 LSC) finally broke through, as Tariq Bakkali found Galietero Diez just inside the box, who fired a shot into the back of the net, putting the Chaps ahead 1-0 at the halftime break.

Sola opened the second half trying to put the Patriots ahead in the 51st minute, but Miles once again stepped up and made the save.

It was a physical second half, with four combined yellow cards between the two teams and seven combined fouls.

Zach Panagiotou got the best look in the final minutes for UT Tyler in the second half, but his shot with four minutes remaining was corralled by Miles and the Chaps held on for the 1-0 shutout victory.

Miles earned his second straight shutout with six saves. The five shutouts this season are tied for the third most in program history, and are tied for the second most in a single season for any LCU goalkeeper.

Galietero Diez continues to move up the record books in points, now tied with Nick Gorrie for the fourth most points in a career with 42. He is also tied with Gorrie for fourth most career goals with 17. The senior also now ranks sixth all time in shot attempts with 86, and is tied with Jorge Martinez for fifth in career shot on goal attempts with 41.

Bakkali is now tied with Mickey Brunton and Gabriel Mendoza for the fourth most assists all-time with 10, becoming just the sixth Chap in program history to tally at least ten assists in a career.

The Chaps will go back on the road to Laredo, Texas to face Texas A&M International. Kickoff is set for 7 PM on Wednesday, Oct. 19.
