DBU pulls away with two goals in final 11 minutes

Box Score DALLAS, Texas - Two goals in the final eleven minutes by Dallas Baptist helped the Patriots pull away for a 3-0 victory over Lubbock Christian on Wednesday, Oct. 26.

The Patriots (6-6-4, 5-3-0 LSC) came out firing, rifling three shots in the first 15 minutes of the match, but all three went just wide of the net. Pablo Galietero Diez sent off the first shot of the match for LCU (7-7-3, 4-3-1 LSC) in the 11th minute, but it also went high.

The first good looks for either side came in the 40th minute, first from Tariq Bakkali that was saved by Alexander Knepper, and then a chance for the Pats by Mason Wallak that was stopped by Tom Miles

Roughly 20 seconds later, Peyton Voelker sent a shot right at Miles that went off his feet, before Voelker's DBU cohort Gavyn Rosales corralled the ball and sent a shot into the back of the net in the 41st minute to put Dallas Baptist ahead 1-0 at halftime.

Lubbock Christian wasted no time in attacking the Patriots defense in the second half, with Federico Said and Bakkali getting off three shots in the first five minutes of the opening salvo. One of those shots by Said went wide, with the other two shots being hauled in by Knepper to keep LCU off the board.

In the 57th minute, Voelker tried to add to his league leading ten goals this season, but Miles got just enough of his glove on the ball to keep LCU within striking distance.

Felipe Mira, Galietero Diez and Enzo Jacques peppered the DBU box with shots in the 60th, 61st and 67th minute, but again, Knepper stepped up and made three more crucial saves for the Patriots.

DBU added to their lead in the 79th minute off a corner kick, with the Patriot assist leader Ethan Unger finding Jonathan Leach for a massive header to put the Patriots up 2-0.

After back-to-back saves by Miles on shots by Voelker and Nathan Hayes, DBU dropped in the dagger in the 87th minute, as Unger found Hayes for his second assist of the night in the 87th minute, giving Dallas Baptist the 3-0 win.

Unger is the second opposing player to record two assists in a match this season against LCU, the last being Diego Casero Comeche of Oklahoma Christian on Sept. 14, which was also a 3-0 loss for the Chaps on the road.

Knepper's seven saves are the most by any opposing goalkeeper this season against LCU, passing the six by Adams State in the season opener.

The Patriot's 20 shot attempts are the most by any opposing team this season against Lubbock Christian. DBU is the first team to tally 20 shot attempts since Oklahoma Christian did so on Sept. 22, 2021.

On a positive note, Bakkali tied Nick Gorrie for second most shots on goal in a career with 46. Galietero Diez is one shot on goal behind Bakkali, sitting at fourth with 45 in his career.

Lubbock Christian closes out the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 29 hosting Texas Permian Basin. The Chaps will celebrate senior night prior to the contest. Kickoff is set for 7 PM from the LCU Soccer & Track Facility. Fans can purchase tickets at lcuchaps.com.
