LUBBOCK, Texas - A goal by Gustavo Barroso with 1:49 left helped Texas Permian Basin tie with Lubbock Christian 1-1 in the final match of the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 29.
Both teams traded shots early, with
Pablo Galietero Diez just missing off a rebounded shot in the third minute. UTPB (4-5-6, 2-3-4 LSC) responded with four shots over the next four minutes, but all of those were off target.
Lubbock Christian (7-7-4, 4-3-2 LSC) almost took the lead in the 12th minute, but Galietero Diez's shot went off the crossbar and out of play. Barroso got the best look for the Falcons just 42 seconds later, but
Tom Miles recorded his first save of the match to keep the contest scoreless.
Both teams traded shots for the rest of the half, with the Falcons getting a pair of shots in the 41st minute that just went wide, and both teams went into the half scoreless.
The Chaps came out hot in the second half, with five shots in the first eight minutes, but a shot by
Jordan Jayapuram in the 53rd minute was stopped by Krstian Hovind. LCU kept the pressure on, with a shot by
Tariq Bakkali in the 60th minute also being saved by Hovind.
After a save by Miles in the 69th minute,
Eduardo Forte raced down the field with the ball, before finding
Federico Said in front of goal. Said's shot was stopped by Hovind and Galietero Diez connected with the ball off the rebound for his eighth goal of the season. Fittingly, Said recorded his first career assist on senior night on the goal.
Galietero Diez almost added to the Chap total in the 72nd minute, but Hovind made another save. His counterpart Miles made a save of his own in the 73rd minute to keep LCU ahead 1-0.
Once again, Bakkali had a chance to put the Chaps up by a deuce, but Hovind stopped the shot in the 84th minute.
With time ticking down, Felipe Almeida fired a shot at the goal that was saved by Miles. The deflection ricocheted toward an unmarked Barroso, who connected in the 88th minute to tie the contest at one apiece.
As the clock ticked down under ten seconds, Sergio Gonzalez had a shot saved by Miles, and then a shot as time expired by David Lopez went wide, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Galietero Diez now sits third all-time in goals scored in a career with 19, four goals behind teammate
Tariq Bakkali. His 46 career points rank fourth all-time.
With the draw, Lubbock Christian clinches the four seed in the Lone Star Conference Tournament. The Chaps will host Oklahoma Christian on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 7 PM. Kickoff is set for 7 PM. Fans can purchase tickets at lcuchaps.com.
