CANYON, Texas (February 10, 2022) Lubbock Christian University was without their leading scorer,
Allie Schulte, Thursday night and No.10 Lubbock Christian University had their worst shooting performance since the 2011-12 season, falling 55-48 in a Lone Star Conference contest at West Texas A&M.
The Lady Chaps have not had to make a starting lineup change all season, but that changed Thursday without the services of Schulte. Filling her spot in the starting lineup was
Shaylee Stovall, who made her first start in her LCU career.
Both teams started off with struggling offenses. LCU opened the game 3-of-18 and WT was 2-of-11 to open things up. LCU had more points from the line than from the field in the first quarter, and their 7-of-7 shooting from the line provided the Lady Chaps an 11-8 lead heading into the second quarter.
Laynee Burr had six points to lead LCU in the second quarter, and her opening bucket of the quarter gave LCU a 13-8 lead 15 seconds into the quarter. Teams traded leads after WT went on a 6-0 run, only to have
Ashton Duncan hit her 249
th career three-pointer, which not only put her into sole possession of second place in LCU's career three-point shooting marks, but it gave LCU a 19-18 lead. Burr followed with a field goal to extend LCU's lead to 21-18 with 1:42 left in the half. WT used a 5-0 run to take a 23-22 lead into the half.
LCU was 6-of-25 from the field in the first half (24.0%). It was not much better at the other end, as WT was sitting with 29.2% (7-of-24) shooting from the field at the break.
The Lady Buffs carried their run from the final 1:27 of the first half into the second half, building a 5-1 run into an 11-1 run after Zamorye Roberts hit a pair of three-pointers three minutes apart for a 29-22 lead. LCU went a span of 5:46 without a field goal, with 4:02 of the span opening the second half. Burr made a layup to end the WT run and it started a 4-0 run.
Grace Foster, who scored all of her 12 points in the second half, had five points in the third quarter, including a three-pointer with four seconds left in the quarter to cut WT's lead to 34-31.
Foster's three-pointer led to a 7-0 LCU run, which helped LCU take a 35-34 lead a minute into the fourth quarter. LCU built the lead to 39-36 off a Duncan layup with 7:14 remaining, but the lead would not last. There were six lead changes in the quarter. Burr made a pair of free-throws with 4:07 left for a 45-43 lead, but it would be LCU's final lead. WT's Madison Kast scored six straight points for a 49-45 lead with 2:07 left. Foster brought LCU within a point (49-48) with a three-pointer with 1:08 left, but Kast added a three-pointer and sealed the win for WT.
The three-pointer by Foster with 1:08 remaining was LCU's one made field goal in the game's final 6:29, as they missed five of their final six shot attempts and finished the game 28.3% (13/46) from the field (21.4%, 3-of-14 from long range). It was their worst shooting night from the field since shooting 20.9% against Metropolitan State of Denver on Nov. 5, 2011.
Burr finished with 13 points to lead LCU. Foster joined her as the only Lady Chaps to finish in double figures.
Zamorye Roberts led WT with 19 points. Kast, who had 11 points in the fourth quarter, finished with 13 points. WT finished 34% (17/50) from the field.
LCU (20-5, 9-4) fell to 7-3 all-time against WT. The Lady Chaps are now 0-4 in the opening games of LSC road trips this season.
TURNING POINT
WT was shooting 26.3% (10/38) through the first three quarters, but then went 7-of-12 from the field. They closed the game 5-of-7 from the field, with Kast making the final four field goals. Her 6-0 run inside four minutes remaining created enough distance from the Lady Chaps down the late stretch.
