Chaps Claim Second-Straight LSC Title With Win Over Greyhounds

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 22, 2022) – Lubbock Christian University wrapped up the Lone Star Conference regular season title with a game to spare, dominating Eastern New Mexico 84-53 Tuesday night in the Rip Griffin Center.

The Chaps (24-2, 11-2) will be the No. 1 seed in next weekend's conference championship tournament, claiming the league's top spot for the second-straight season. They will play at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, against the winner of the 8/9 seed matchup at the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas.

Lubbock Christian's win also matched the program record for wins in a single season, which was set by the 1982-83 Chaparrals (24-9), who were coached by LCU Hall of Honor member John Copeland.

LCU didn't quite control the game from the tipoff, because ENMU won that, but the Greyhounds missed their first shot attempt and the Chaps were in control from that point on, as Lloyd Daniels hit a three on the other end. Lubbock Christian would go on to score the first 15 points of the game, and the lead would never dip to single digits again.

An efficient 57.7 percent shooting in the first half led the Chaps to 50 points before the break, as three different players reached the double-figure mark in the first 20 minutes of play. They held the Greyhounds to 33.3 percent shooting and only 27 points in the first half.

Four of LCU's five starters reached the double-digit mark in the game overall, led by 22 points from Daniels. The senior shot an efficient 7-14 from the field, including a career-high five three-pointers made. Parker Hicks and Aamer Muhammad had 16 points apiece, and Hicks added in 11 rebounds for his fourth-straight double-double and 12th this season overall. Rowan Mackenzie finished the game with 10 points.

Trading baskets early in the first half, LCU kept in front of ENMU by more than 20 points, but also didn't let them extend their lead any further. With just over 13 minutes to go though, the Chaps used a quick 8-0 run to push the gap out to 30 points.

Daniels and Hicks were subbed out with just under six minutes left to play and the game well in hand, and the bench was emptied for the game's final two minutes.

TURNING POINT
Lubbock Christian led wire-to-wire in this win, scoring 15 straight points to start the game and never letting Eastern New Mexico cut the lead to single-digits.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Tuesday marked the 11th time this season that the Chaps have held an opponent to fewer than 60 points in a single game. Opposing teams average just 62.6 points per game against LCU.

NEXT UP
Lubbock Christian will close out the regular season with Western New Mexico, hosting the Mustangs at 7:30 p.m. at the Rip Griffin Center. LCU's graduating players will be honored on the floor prior to the start of the game.
