LUBBOCK, Texas - A second half goal from
Lexi De La Cruz and a stalwart performance in net from Abby Kone allowed the Lady Chaps to earn their fourth draw of the season, tying no. 1 Dallas Baptist 1-1 on Saturday, Sept. 17.
The Patriots (5-0-1, 1-1 Lone Star Conference) came out hot, tallying five shots in the first 11 minutes, with two of those being on goal. Kone saved both shots to keep the match scoreless.
Michelle Gonzalez got the best look for the Patriots in the first half in the 32nd minute, but once again, Kone stepped up and made a major save to keep the game tied at zero.
Austyn Applewhite came off the bench for DBU in the first half, recording two shots on goal but once again, Kone stopped all attempts by the Pats and sent LCU (4-0-4, 1-0-1 Lone Star Conference) into the half tied.
The Patriots did not take long to break the deadlock, as a pass from Haley Roberson found the foot of Gonzalez, who then rifled a pass to Annie Severide. Severide connected and in the 48th minute, gave Dallas Baptist the 1-0 lead.
The Lady Chaps did not trail for long, as
Arely Jimenez fired a corner kick into the DBU box in the 52nd minute. The ball bounced around the box, going off the foot of
Julie Shahi before De La Cruz got just enough of her boot on the ball to score the equalizer and tie the match at one goal apiece.
The second half was quiet for both teams, with
Graycen Rasmussen recording four shots for the Lady Chaps in the final 38 minutes, just missing on each of them, as LCU held on to tie the top-ranked team in all of Division-II women's soccer.
The Lady Chaps now move to 1-7-2 all-time against ranked teams. LCU earned their first win over a ranked team last season over no. 12 DBU.
With her eighth goal of the season,
Lexi De La Cruz ties teammate
Makenna Pate and former Lady Chap Stacy-Ann Johnson for tenth most goals scored in a season for any LCU player.
By just stepping on the pitch today, Jimenez became the sixth player in program history to play in 70 matches for the Lady Chaps. Seeing the pitch for 86 minutes, she passed current Lubbock Christian assistant coach
Brooke Wendl for eighth most minutes played in a career, now with 4,910 minutes played in her career.
The Lady Chaps will continue conference play, heading to Oklahoma City to face Oklahoma Christian on Wednesday, Sept. 21. Kickoff is set for 5 PM.
