Offensive outburst pushes Lady Chaps over Eagles

| By:

LCU has now outscored Oklahoma Christian 45-5 all time

Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - After a quiet first half, Lubbock Christian ripped off three goals in nine minutes in the second half, rolling past Oklahoma Christian for the 3-1 victory on Wednesday, Sept. 21.

Oklahoma Christian (2-4-2) (0-3 LSC) started hot, as Manon Ceresola recorded the first shot of the match just thirty seconds into the contest. Neither team would tally another shot attempt until the 17th minute, when Lexi De La Cruz sent a shot just over the cross bar for the Lady Chaps (5-0-4, 2-0-1 LSC).

The best chance of the match for either side in the opening frame came in the 33rd minute, with Abby Kone saving a shot from Carson Hazel. The teams headed to the locker room in a scoreless ballgame, reminiscent of the scoreless draw the two teams played in Lubbock in 2021.

Like her teammate Ceresola, Raquel Fanelli tried to get the Eagles on the board early in the second half, but another save from Kone in the 46th minute kept the match scoreless.

The Lady Chaps got their first corner kick of the match in the 52nd minute, with Maddie Hoel launching a ball into the box. After the ball deflected off of Graycen Rasmussen's noggin, Celia Duarte picked up the loose ball and poked it through the back of the net, giving LCU the 1-0 lead.

The corner kick set piece worked again in favor of the Lady Chaps, as Hoel once again lobbed a ball into the box for her teammates. This time, Kenley Blevins was able to corral the ball off a deflection by Arely Jimenez and fire it pass the goalkeeper, pushing the Lubbock Christian advantage to 2-0 in the 58th minute.

Lubbock Christian's offensive outburst did not end until the 61st minute, when Rasmussen found herself in front of the box after nice pass from Hannah Irons and with one nifty spin move around her defender, she fired a laser of a shot past the keeper and gave the Lady Chaps a 3-0 advantage.

Oklahoma Christian would not go down without a fight, as Ceresola laced a shot off of a free kick that found the back of the net in the 69th minute, cutting LCU's lead down to 3-1. Ceresola's goal is the first score for the Eagles in 667:50 of game action and 2,174 days against the Lady Chaps.

The Eagles had multiple chances to draw closer against the Lady Chaps, but each shot went wide of the net. A save by Kone with 16 seconds left in the contest iced the match and gave Lubbock Christian their fifth win of the season and their second conference victory.

Oklahoma Christian outshot the Lady Chaps 12-9, but Lubbock Christian had more shots on goal with six compared to the Eagles' four.

With two assists, Hoel becomes the first Lady Chap to record multiple assists in a match since Avery Jennings picked up a pair of assists on Sept. 25, 2021 against Texas A&M International.

This is the first time Rasmussen has tallied three points in a match in her career. Through seven matches played, the freshman has picked up 10 points this season.

With the goal, Duarte is now tied for the eighth most career goals with 13. She now moves into the top-10 in shots attempted in a career, with 105. Her now 37 career points break a tie with teammate Makenna Pate and also leapfrog Duarte past Ashley Ledford for seventh most all-time.

Jimenez now needs to play for just five minutes to become the seventh Lady Chap in program history to play for 5,000 minutes in her career.

LCU moves to 12-0-2 all time against Oklahoma Christian. The Lady Chaps have outscored the Eagles 45-5 in 14 matches.

Lubbock Christian returns home to face Texas A&M International on Saturday, Sept. 24. Kickoff is set for 1 PM. Fans can purchase tickets for the match at lcuchaps.com.
