Lady Chaps slow down Buffs, earns draw with no. 10 West Texas A&M

Lady Chaps 0-0-2 this season against ranked foes

LUBBOCK, Texas - The second-highest scoring offense in the LSC was held without a goal for the second straight match, as a scrappy Lady Chap defense earned a 0-0 draw with no. 10 West Texas A&M on Wednesday, Sept. 28.

The Lady Chaps (6-0-5, 3-0-2 LSC) came out firing, with Lexi De La Cruz firing a shot in the 14th minute that was just saved by the Lady Buffs (7-1-1, 1-1-1 LSC) Reagan Heelan to keep the match scoreless.

After a yellow card on West Texas A&M's Alexsis Villarreal, Julie Shahi fired another shot on goal in the 26th minute, giving Heelan another save.

With less than three minutes remaining in the first half, Maria-Frances Serrant got the best look of the opening frame for the Buffs, but the dribbler rolled right into the arms of a waiting Abby Kone and the two squads went into the half notched at zero.

Breaking away from the rest of the pack, De La Cruz found herself one-on-one with Heelan in the 59th minute, but Heelan got just enough of her glove on the ball to make the save.

Seconds later off a corner kick, Shahi laced a shot to the upper part of the net, with Heelan getting the tip of her finger on the ball for a jumping save.

Serrant again got a quality look for the Buffs in the 76th minute, but Kone once again was able to get her mitts on the ball before any damage could be done.

Kenley Blevins got one more chance for the Lady Chaps in the 84th minute, but Heelan made her seventh save of the night and neither team could score, with the match ending in a scoreless draw.

The Lady Chaps have now tied two top-10 ranked opponents this season. LCU tied no. 1 DBU 1-1 earlier this season.

The draw is the fifth of the season for Lubbock Christian, tying the 2016 season for most in one year. LCU went 8-5-5 that season.

With the shutout, Kone has now tied Alison Brinson for fourth most shutouts in a career with five. Kone also tied Brinson for fifth most shutouts in a single season, also five. It is also the 80th shutout in the history of the Lady Chap soccer program. LCU is 74-0-6 all-time in shutouts, including 3-0-2 this season.

Arely Jimenez played all 90 minutes against the Lady Buffs, moving her past Priscilla Brannon for seventh most minutes played in a career. Jimenez has now tallied 5,157 minutes played as a Lady Chap. She also has now tied Katie Pullano for fourth most career matches played with 73.

LCU will have ten days off between matches, facing UT Tyler on the road on Saturday, Oct. 8. Kickoff against the Patriots is set for 2 PM.
