Second half outburst wills Lady Chaps over Wolves

LCU scores three goals in the second half to pull off come-from-behind victory

LUBBOCK, Texas - A three goal second half scoring run by the Lady Chaps helped will Lubbock Christian to a 3-1 come-from-behind victory over CSU Pueblo on Thursday, Sept. 8.

The Thunderwolves (1-4) became the first team all season to score first against the Lady Chaps, as Faith Meredith found herself open inside the box to push the pack ahead 1-0 in the 26th minute.

Hannah Irons got the best look of the opening frame for Lubbock Christian, with a shot from outside the box that skipped off the top of the crossbar.

The second half scoring came about ten minutes in for the LCU (3-0-2), as Avery Jennings sent a long pass down the field to Graycen Rasmussen, who corralled the ball from outside the box and fired home the equalizer in the 55th minute.

Eight minutes later, Julie Shahi controlled a ball off of a deflection, lobbing a pass to Lexi De La Cruz and the sophomore was able to sneak the ball past the keeper and give LCU the 2-1 lead in the 63rd minute.

De La Cruz and the Lady Chaps finished off the Thunderwolves in the 87th minute, as Stephanie McClung found the Lubbock native for her second goal of the night, putting away the Pack with a 3-1 victory.

De La Cruz's seven goals is second most in the Lone Star Conference this season, as are her 17 shots on goal. The seven goals are also tied for the second most in all of Division II as of press time.

Jennings is now tied for the lead with Megan Copeland of St. Mary's for most assists in the conference with three.

The three goals scored in the second half are the second time this season the Lady Chaps have scored a trifecta of goals in one half this season. LCU scored three goals in the first half against New Mexico Highlands in a 5-0 victory.

LCU has now trailed for just 32:50 of game action in 450 minutes played.

In their three wins this season, LCU has outscored their opponents 11-1 and out shot opponents 44-14. The Lady Chaps out shot the Wolves 19-8, including 10-3 in shots on goal.

The Lady Chaps will have a quick turnaround, facing Colorado Mesa at the LCU Soccer & Track Facility on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 12 PM. Fans can purchase tickets for the contest at lcuchaps.com.
