DALLAS, Texas - Russell Harrison and
Rowan Mackenzie combined for 44 points, as LCU knocked off Dallas Baptist 73-69 on Saturday, Jan. 21.
Both teams traded shots from beyond the arc early, with the Chaparrals (12-6, 8-4 LSC) draining three straight from deep by Harrison, Mackenzie and
Aaron Gonzales to go ahead 13-11 before the first media timeout of the game. That shot by Gonzales kicked off a 13-3 run for Lubbock Christian, including three straight makes from the field by
Kurt Wegscheider, as the Chaps took a 23-14 lead with 12:03 left in the first.
The two foes struggled to score for a bit, but a mini 10-0 outburst thanks to
Najeeb Muhammad and Gonzales, along with threes from Harrison, swelled the Chap advantage to 35-19 with 4:26 remaining. A triple from Muhammad along with a jumper by Mackenzie pushed the Chaparrals ahead by 15, but DBU (10-10, 5-7 LSC) answered with five points from Ricky Lujan to go into the half down 40-30 at the Burg Center.
The Patriots quickly cut the lead down to just two in the second half, thanks to a pair of three-pointers by Carson Hughes and a shot from beyond the arc from Ta'Jay Dunlap. After another Huges triple tied the contest, a pair of free throws from Dunlap gave DBU a 48-46 lead with 14:00 left, the Pats' first lead since it was 11-10 in the opening stanza.
Five unanswered points from Harrison gave LCU the lead back for a quick minute, but an and-1 play from Justin Haire put the lead back in Dallas Baptist's possession, going up 54-51 with 11:07 remaining. The two squads traded the lead for a bit, but back-to-back layups from Cameron Kahn put DBU on top 62-59 with 6:37 left in the contest.
A jumper from Dunlap and a pair of free throws by Kahn gave the Patriots their largest lead of the game, going up 69-63 with 3:46 left in the matchup. Gonzales made a quick transition layup off a nice pass from Muhammad, and Mackenzie and Muhammad made three free throws to cut the score to 69-68 with 2:23 remaining.
Strong defense from
Karhan Jones kept the Patriots off the board, and after a foul, Muhammad gave LCU a 70-69 lead with a pair of free throws with 1:31 remaining. Austin Garner missed a shot from deep for DBU, and Mackenzie nailed two more shots from the charity stripe to make it a three-point game. A steal and another make from the line by Muhammad gave LCU the lead for good, and two desperation shots by the Pats fell short as Lubbock Christian completed the comeback, knocking off DBU 73-69.
LCU held Dallas Baptist off the scoreboard for the final 3:46 of the game, going on a 10-0 run. The Chaps went 8-for-10 from the charity stripe during that stretch, while also holding DBU 0-for-6 from the floor and forcing two turnovers.
The win is LCU's first win over Dallas Baptist since Feb. 8, 2018, breaking a six-game losing streak. It is also the first Lubbock Christian win in Dallas over the Patriots since Dec. 17, 2016 and just their third win ever in the Big D over the Pats.
Mackenzie picked up his third career double-double, scoring 24 points and hauling in 10 rebounds. The Aussie went 8-for-12 (66.7 percent) from the field and 2-for-3 (66.7 percent) from three, finishing with 2 assists and one block.
Harrison scored 20 points in the game, his fifth game this season scoring at least that amount. The Lubbock native also hauled in three rebounds and had a steal. Harrison is now just 16 points away from 1,000 points in his career at NCAA schools, and 88 points away from 2,000 career points.
Wegscheider finished in double figures with 11 points, pulling down four rebounds and dishing out four assists.
Kahn led the Pats with 15 points and also had 10 boards.
LCU continues their four-game road stretch, heading to Wichita Falls for a rematch against Midwestern State on Thursday, Jan. 26. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM.
