Abamu Battled For a Championship, While His Teammates Competed in Texoma

Martins Abamu Claimed His Second-Ever ITA Cup Victory

LUBBOCK, Texas (October 16, 2023) – It was a busy weekend for Lubbock Christian University's men's tennis program, as Martins Abamu competed in Rome, Ga. at the ITA Cup and several members were in Wichita Falls, Texas competing in the Midwestern State invitational.

Abamu (No.4-seed) competed in three matches at the ITA Cup and opened play with a win Thursday (6-3, 6-4) over Sebastian Pjontek of Washburn. The fifth-year senior, who arrived to the 16-player national championship event after winning the ITA South Central Regional for a second consecutive season, continued his play Friday falling to Baptiste Mercier of Flagler College (6-0, 6-3) Mercier, a Cameron transfer, ended up claiming the Division II singles championship. Abamu's final match was against No.2-seed Ruben Fonga of Tiffin, with Fonga winning 6-0, 6-3 to defeat Abamu for a second consecutive season.

Thursday's win for Abamu placed him with a 2-4 all-time record at the ITA Cup and he is LCU's only qualifier for the event. He heads into the spring portion of the schedule with a 11-4 record in singles play this season.

Meanwhile at the MSU Invitational, LCU received one flight title, as Blas Ruiz Romero went 3-0 in singles and won the Flight-C title. It was not an easy road to go 3-0 for Romero, as he needed a 10-7 tiebreaker to advance out of the quarterfinals (defeated Gen Naraya of Southeastern Oklahoma State) and then played a semifinals match against Philip Kamara (of Midwestern State) in which he won 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (3-7), 1-0 (12-10) in match featuring a pair of set tiebreakers and a match tiebreaker. Romero improved to 9-2 in singles play with the trio of victories and he is tied for second on the squad in wins (9) with Pablo Segura, who was one of six Chaps to claim at least one victory in singles play in Wichita Falls. Sabri Laphitz (2-0) and Hugo Redelinger (2-1) had at least two wins to join Romero.

In doubles play, LCU had a trio of teams go 2-1. Teams of Herman Aguirre / Segura, Matthijs Mallee / Tristan Vigneron and Laphitz / Redelinger each completed the task. Aguirre / Segura improve their mark to 8-1 paired together this season.

The events were the final events of the fall schedule for LCU. Their spring portion of the season schedule will be announced at a later time.
