LUBBOCK, Texas (November 18, 2023) – No.22 Lubbock Christian University received at least one field goal from all 13 Lady Chaparrals touching the floor, and the Lady Chaparrals outscored King (Tenn.) 27-1 in points off turnovers to cruise to an 82-42 victory to close out the Food King Classic Saturday night inside Rip Griffin Center.
Maci Maddox led the Lady Chaps (5-1) with 14 points. Grace Foster also tacked on nine points and Taylor Allen, making her collegiate and Lady Chaps debut, helped out with nine points off the bench.
The Lubbock Christian offense was very productive from three-point land, pouring in eight threes on 15 attempts (53.3%). Deja Johnson, making her season debut) was the most prolific shooter for the Lady Chaps, draining two treys en route to an eight-point performance.
Lubbock Christian's defense held King (TN) to only 7.7% shooting from beyond the arc (1/13) and 23.5% from the field (12/51). The Tornado received 12 points and nine rebounds in the loss from Ashley Allen.
How It Happened
After falling behind 2-0, Lubbock Christian went on a 5-0 run with 8:17 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from MacI Maddox, to take a 5-2 lead. The Lady Chaps then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 13-12 advantage. Lubbock Christian did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of its 13 points close to the basket. Allen had nine of the team's 12 points, while LCU was moistly paced in the frame by Maddox, who had eight in the quarter.
Lubbock Christian kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 8:58 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 20-12. The Lady Chaps proceeded to tack on five points to that lead and enjoyed a 36-23 advantage heading into halftime. Lubbock Christian saw non-starters score seven of its 23 total points off the bench in the quarter (five from Audrey Spurgin). Maddox and Audrey Robertson each had six points in the quarter, with Maddox finishing with all 14 of her points in the first half. LCU was 9-of-15 (60%) shooting in the second quarter, while they held King to two field goals (2-of-13, 15.4%) in the quarter.
Following intermission, Lubbock Christian continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 57-30 before going on a 7-0 run to expand its lead further to 64-30 with 39 seconds to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Tornados had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Lady Chaps still entered the fourth quarter with a 64-32 edge. Lubbock Christian took advantage of eight King (TN) turnovers in the quarter, scoring 12 points off of takeaways. Nine different Lady Chaps chipped in offensively in the quarter, with Allen scoring seven points to lead the Lady Chaps, who out-scored King 28-9 in the frame.
Lubbock Christian kept widening that lead, expanding it to 75-40 before going on a 7-0 run to grow the lead to 82-40 with 2:03 to go in the contest. Playing mostly with bench players, Lubbock Christian received points from eight different Lady Chaps in the quarter and they held King to one field goal in the quarter (1/12, 8.3%). The Tornado went the final 5:34 without a field goal.
