ODESSA, Texas – Southeastern Oklahoma State overcame a 13-point second half deficit to hand the Lubbock Christian University men's basketball team their third loss of the season on Saturday afternoon at the Walk On's Thanksgiving Classic.
LCU guard
Aaron Gonzales scored a career-high 24 points, including 19 in the second half to lead LCU on an impressive run to give the Chaps a double-digit lead. This marks the second consecutive game Gonzales has scored 20 or more points.
How it Happened
The Chaps (3-3) trailed, 37-29 at the half, after struggling from the field in the opening period. LCU shot 12-of-27 (44.4 percent) from the field in the first 20 minutes of play.
After trading buckets for the first four minutes of the second half, the Chaps went on a 28 to nine run to take a commanding 13-point lead with seven minutes to go. LCU went 9-of-10 from the field during the run.
The Savage Storm (4-3) responded with a 21 to six run, capped off by a Kody Clouet three pointer to take a 76-74 lead with 1:06 remaining.
On the next possession, the Chaps tied the game on a Gonzales made layup. On the defensive end,
Tiras Morton collected a steal on the Savage Storm possession, but the Chaps were unable to capitalize on it.
Southeastern went down and missed a jumper, but the Chaps turned the ball over after corralling the rebound. Robert Briley collected the loose ball and laid it in to give the Savage Storm a two-point lead with just four seconds to go.
On their last gasp, LCU threw a full-court pass that sailed out of bounds. Southeastern made two free throws to finish the game 80-76.
Game Notes
Gonzales was 10-of-14 from the field, 4-of-6 from three and made four free throws. He also lead the Chaps in rebounds with six and swatted away one shot.
Najeeb Muhammad added 14 points and six assists for LCU,
Tiras Morton scored 12 points and collected two steals, and Kurt Wegschieder came off the bench to scored seven points and grabbed five rebounds.
The Savage Storm scored 28 points in the paint while LCU scored 20. Southeastern's bench outscored LCU's 24 to 14.
Southeastern was led by Brennen Burns with 23 points while Robert Briley added 20 for the Savage Storm.

The Chaps will play in their second game of the Walk On's Thanksgiving Classic tomorrow afternoon against Northern New Mexico. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Falcon Dome in Odessa, Texas.
