FORT SMITH, Arkansas - The Lubock Christian University men's basketball team continued Lone Star play with a 73-69 win over Arkansas-Fort Smith on Saturday afternoon. The Chaps moved to 6-3 on the season and remain unbeaten in LSC play.
The Chaparrals (6-3, 2-0) had four players score in double figures, led by Tiras Morton, who had 16 points, four assists and four steals. Kurt Wegscheider added 12 points and two steals and Najeeb Muhammad helped out with 12 points and three steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 15-6, LCU went on a 6-0 run with 14:38 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Vito Vujovic, to narrow its deficit to 15-12. The Chaparrals continued to narrow the gap and tied the game at 38-38 heading into halftime. LCU got a boost from behind the arc in the period, hitting six shots to account for 18 of its 38 points.
Arkansas-Fort Smith then snagged a 51-46 advantage before Lubbock Christian responded by going on an 8-0 run to seize a 54-51 lead with 12:02 to go in the contest. The Chaparrals kept expanding the margin and clamped up defensively for the 73-69 win. Lubbock Christian capitalized on eight Arkansas-Fort Smith turnovers in the period, collecting 12 points off those turnovers.
Game Notes
- Lubbock Christian outscored Arkansas-Fort Smith 35-31 in the second half after a halftime tie to pick up the victory.
- The Chaps found success from beyond the arc, knocking down nine treys in the game.
- LCU forced 14 Arkansas-Fort Smith turnovers while committing only six themselves in Saturday's game. The Chaparrals turned those takeaways into 19 points on the offensive end of the floor. Morton's four steals led the way for Lubbock Christian.
