LUBBOCK, Texas - The Lubbock Christian University men's basketball team returned to the Rip Griffin Center with a dominant 83-70 win over Texas A&M International on Sunday afternoon. The Chaps improve to 7-3 on the year and 3-0 in Lone Star play with the win.
The Chaparrals had four players score in double figures, led by Tiras Morton, who had a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Najeeb Muhammad tacked on 21 points and four assists and Aaron Gonzales chipped in with 12 points.
The Lubbock Christian offense was very productive from beyond the arc, making 10 threes on 19 attempts.
How It Happened
After jumping out to an 11-10 advantage, LCU went on a 10-0 run with 13:38 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Ethan Duncan, to increase its lead to 21-10.
The Chaps and Dustdevils traded buckets for the next 10 minutes of action as LCU took a 41-29 lead with 2:53 to go. TAMIU closed the period with a 11-3 run to cut the LCU lead to three points going into the locker room.
Lubbock Christian relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 44 points.
Following intermission, Lubbock Christian kept widening that lead, expanding it to 56-50 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Duncan's jumper, to grow the lead to 61-50 with 9:20 to go in the contest.
The Chaparrals kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 83-70 win.
Jaylen Thompson lead the Dustdevils with 18 points and six boards. Mathew Okoye added 14 points.
Game Notes
- Tiras Morton recorded his third double-double of the season and was four assist shy of a triple-double. He also added two steals and two blocks.
- Najeeb Muhammad's 21 points were the most he has scored this season.
- Morton, Muhammad, Aaron Gonzales, Ethan Duncan, and Kendall Dow made two three-pointers each.
- The Chap defense forced 12 Dustdevil turnovers leading to 16 points on the offensive end.
- LCU shot 56.5 percent (26-46) from the field, 52.6 percent (10-19) from behind the arc, and 84 percent (21-25) from the charity stripe.
- The Chaps forced TAMIU to shot 44.7 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three.
- LCU dished out 13 assists total, Morton lead the team with six.
