Strong First Half Gives Chaps Fifth Consecutive Win

LUBBOCK, Texas -  Ethan Duncan collected 20 first half points to help lead the Lubbock Christian University men's basketball team over Texas A&M-Kingsville 76-60 at home Tuesday afternoon. 

The Chaparrals (8-3, 4-0) had four players score in double figures, led by Duncan, who was scoreless in the second half. Aaron Gonzales tacked on 13 points, Tiras Morton helped out with a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds, and Kurt Wegscheider added 11 points for the Chaps. 

The LCU offense was strong from downtown, knocking down 13 threes on 32 attempts. Duncan hit six treys for the Chaparrals in the contest.

The Chap defense held Javelina shooters to only 38.6 percent from the field.


How It Happened

The Chaps came out firing, jumping out to a 12-3 advantage in the opening minutes of action. The Javelinas answered with a 13-6 run to cut the Chap lead to two points with 11:31 to go in the opening period. LCU and TAMUK traded buckets for the next seven minutes as the Chaps led 36-27 with 3:59 left. LCU closed the opening period with a 16-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Kurt Wegscheider to take a 52-27 lead into the locker room. 

The Chaps relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down 10-of-19 shots to account for 30 of its 52 points. The LCU offense was 21-of-32 (65.6 percent) from the field in the period. 

The Javelinas opened the second half with a 13-3 run to cut the deficit to 55-41 with 14:58 left in the contest. LCU answered with a 12-3 to grow their lead to 22 points. The Javelinas narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Chaps still cruised the rest of the way for the 76-60 win.

LCU capitalized on four Texas A&M-Kingsville turnovers in the period, collecting six points off those turnovers.


Game Notes

  • Tiras Morton notched his fourth double-double of the season. 
  • The LCU defense forced 15 Javelina turnovers leading to 24 points on the offensive end. 
  • The Chaps dished out 14 assists lead by Najeeb Muhammad's four, while only turning the ball over seven times. 
  • Vito Vujovic provided a spark off the bench putting up six points and grabbing three rebounds. 
  • LCU never trailed in the game, leading wire-to-wire for their fifth consecutive win. 
  • The Chaps are 4-0 in Lone Star play for the first time since the 2021-22 season.
