Chaps Tennis Sweeps Their Home-Opening Weekend

Chaps Claim Wins Over Seward County and McMurry For LSC Lead-in

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 20, 2023) – The Lubbock Christian University men's tennis program played their first-ever dual matches at Penny Gullo Tennis Center, opening the spring schedule with a 5-2 win over Seward County Community College Friday and a 7-0 win over McMurry Saturday.

Vs. SCCC
With SCCC fielding two doubles teams, LCU just had to win one of two of the doubles matches to claim the double point. The team of Herman Aguirre and Carlos Gutierrez, who were teaming up for the first time this season, completed the task with a 7-5 win over Antoine Adamiak / Richard Patte.

LCU's 1-0 lead increased to 3-0 with a pair of default wins, as SCCC had four singles participants. To claim the duals win LCU had to win one of their singles matches, which was achieves with Sabri Laphitz winning 6-4, 6-3 in his No.4 singles match over Patte. Kelly Giese, playing the No.1 singles match for LCU, won his match with a 10-7 win in the third set for the win over Seb Holden. Giese improved to 3-1 in duals play this season and 8-3 overall.

Vs. McM
The Chaps claimed their first 7-0 shutout/sweep of the campaign, winning all seven matches. The LCU doubles team of Matthijs Mallee and Alex Donnelly improved to 7-1 this season with a 7-6 win, claiming the tiebreaker 7-5. Carlos Gutierrez / Kelly Giese and Dia Ndumbe / Jack Williams each won their doubles match to help LCU claim the doubles team point. Gutierrez and Giese were teaming up for the first time this season.

In singles play, Braden Tipton occupied the No.1 spot for the first time and won his No.1 singles match in three sets over Red Smith. Tipton dropped the opening set, but rebounded to win the next two sets. Aguirre, Nikita Deev, Laphitz, Hugo Redelinger and Alex Donnelly each won their singles matches. Deev and Redelinger were competing in singles matches for the first time this season.

In Summary
The pair of dual victories has LCU 4-1 this season and they now prepare to host St. Mary's Friday for their first Lone Star Conference duals match in program history.
