LUBBOCK, Texas - Despite taking an eight-run lead into the seventh inning, no. 3/3 Angelo State scored six unanswered runs to knock off Lubbock Christian 14-13 in eleven innings on Friday, Mar. 24.
The Rams (27-4, 25-4 LSC) took the early lead in the top of the first, after an RBI-single from Jordan Williams scored Tripp Clark to give Angelo State a 1-0 lead. The Chaparrals (16-10, 15-10 LSC) answered with authority in the bottom of the second, as a
Jarred Gibson two-run homer put LCU on top 2-1.
Angelo State answered in the top the third, as a Thomas Cain, two-RBI single put the Rams back on top 3-2. The long ball once again worked for Lubbock Christian, this time with
Brevin McCool hitting a solo shot to left field, tying the contest at three runs apiece. The two teams traded the lead again in the top of the fourth, as an RBI double from Justin Harris scored Weston Valasek to put ASU back ahead 4-3.
Lubbock Christian retook the lead and then some, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, beginning with a two-RBI single from McCool, scoring
Carson Ogilvie and
Caden Hensley to give the Chaps a 5-4 lead. An
Eduardo Acosta double scored McCool to add another run, before a two-RBI single from Gibson scored Acosta and
Nate Van Maanen putting LCU on top 8-4. With the bases loaded, Ogilvie drew a walk with the bases loaded, bringing home Gibson, and another two-RBI single from McCool, his second of the inning, scored Hensley and
Hayden Blair, pushing the Chaparral lead to 11-4.
Chris Shull added another run in the bottom of the sixth, as his RBI single brought Acosta home to swell the Lubbock Christian advantage to 12-4. The Rams began climbing back in the top of the seventh, beginning with an RBI single from Clark scoring Jacob Guerrero. Valasek brought in three more runs with a home run to left center field, and Angelo State cut the Chap lead down to 12-8. A sac fly from McCool in the bottom of the seventh added another run to the LCU total, as a Hensley run put the Chaps ahead 13-8.
An RBI groundout from Guerrero scored Austin Beck in the top of the eighth, before a solo shot from Clark cut the LCU lead down to 13-10. The Rams added two more later in the frame thanks to a Kamden Kelton two-RBI single, and ASU trailed just 13-12. With one swing of the bat in the top of the ninth, Beck brought the Rams all the way back, tying the game at 13 with a homer over the left field wall. The Chaps went down in order in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game to extra innings.
Kelton drew a walk in the top of the tenth, and advanced all the way to third on two wild pitches.
Tyler Manyo came up big for the Chaps, striking out Harris to end the inning and keep the game tied. The Chaparral offense could not answer in the bottom of the tenth, and the two foes went to the eleventh inning.
The Rams loaded the bases in the top of the eleventh, and a sac fly from Williams scored Guerrero to give Angelo State a 14-13 lead. Hensley reached first base with a two-out single in the bottom of the eleventh, but ASU forced a pop fly to end the game, coming all the way back to take game one 14-13 in extra innings.
ASU was led offensively by Williams, who went 3-for-6 with two RBI and a run, while Clark went 2-for-5 with four runs and two RBI. McCool was a dynamo at the dish for the Chaps, going 3-for-5 with six RBI and two runs scored. Gibson went 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored.
Scott Ellis (4-2) earned the win for the Rams, going 4.2 innings, allowing two hits, walking two and striking out seven. Ellis also retired nine straight batters from the eighth inning to the eleventh inning.
Manyo (0-1) was handed the loss, allowing one run off a hit, walking three batters and striking out two in two innings.
Aydan Alger started the game for the Chaps, going 6.1 innings, allowing eight runs off nine hits, walking three and striking out six. Koi Carillo went 0.2 of an inning in relief, facing just three batters and striking out one.
Logan Ellis also went 0.2 of an inning, allowing four runs off three hits.
Josh Akers went 1.1 innings, allowing one run off three hits and striking out a batter. As a staff, the Chaps hit eight combined batters.
The Chaps and Rams will meet again on Saturday, Mar. 25, playing two seven inning games. First pitch for game one of tomorrow's doubleheader is set for 2:00 PM.
