Chaps Cruise Past Mustangs For LSC Dual Win

All Four Singles Matches Won By LCU Were in Straight Sets

LUBBOCK, Texas (April 1, 2023) – The Chaparrals returned to the win column in Lone Star Conference duals play, as the Lubbock Christian University men's tennis program claimed a 5-2 victory over Western New Mexico Saturday afternoon at Penny Gullo Tennis Center.
 
LCU took a 1-0 lead in the dual by claiming the doubles point. The Chaps No.1 doubles team of Kelly Giese and Braden Tipton and No.3 team of Martins Abamu and Herman Aguirre each claimed a 6-3 set win for the match. Giese and Tipton claimed their fifth consecutive win in doubles play and are 12-5 together this season (highest win total on the squad). They improved to 8-3 in duals and 3-0 in LSC play. The "A Team" of Abamu and Aguirre won their third straight win together, and they move to 4-1 in duals and 2-0 in LSC duals.
 
Aguirre won his singles match in No.3 singles for a 2-0 dual lead before WNMU took the No.4 singles match to cut LCU's duals lead in half (2-1). That was the last of any drama, as No.2 singles was claimed by Giese and Abamu clinched the match and gave LCU a 4-1 lead with a No.1 singles win. Braden Tipton (No.6 singles) also won for LCU. All four singles matches won by LCU were in straight sets.
 
Abamu's win improved his team lead in singles win to 17 wins (17-6). Improving to 9-3 in singles in duals, Abamu's win was his first in a LSC dual (1-2). Aguirre (8-2 in his last 10 singles matches played), Giese and Tipton each improved to 2-1 in LSC duals. Tipton was his third consecutive singles match.
 
The win moved LCU to 8-6 overall and they are 2-1 in LSC play. They complete the week's play Sunday hosting UT Permian Basin at 1 p.m. at Penny Gullo Tennis Center on the LCU campus.
