LCU Season Ends at NCAA Division II South Central Regional

LAWTON, Okla. (April 28, 2023) – No.4-seed Lubbock Christian University knew they had an uphill challenge facing No.4-seed and No.12-nationally ranked Cameron, and LCU's fun rebirth season came to a close with a 4-0 loss in their first NCAA Division II South Central Region appearance in program history.

The men's program, playing their first intercollegiate season since 1982, was swept, as they played "to clinch" Friday in a match that was moved up (start time) due to rain in the forecast. The Aggies have the No.17 (Tomas Almeida / Thomas Cardona) and No.18 (Joao Duleba / Baptiste Mercier) ranked doubles teams and their top team never finished against LCU's No.21 nationally ranked team of Kelly Giese and Braden Tipton (the No.1 doubles match). The Aggies won No.2 and No.3 doubles matches before the no.1 doubles match concluded to give Cameron a 1-0 lead heading into singles.

In singles, the first three completed matches were victories by the Aggies for the clinching 4-0 lead. Martins Abamu, nationally ranked No.23, was leading No.17 Almeida in No.1-singles (Abamu won the opening set) at the time of the clinching (their match went unfinished).

LCU closed their season with a 12-10 record, with three of the losses against nationally ranked foes. A bright note on the season is LCU's singles individuals combined to go 5-3 against nationally ranked individuals, and their doubles teams combined to go 4-4 against nationally ranked doubles teams. Martins Abamu led LCU's singles competitors going 21-8 on the season (he was 12-2 in singles played as part of duals). Giese and Tipton went 17-7 on the season as a doubles team (13-5 in doubles played as part of duals). Abamu highlighted the season winning the ITA South Central Regional singles tournament in the fall, which earned LCU's first individual berth to a ITA Cup.
