Chaps Tennis Was Perfect In Pueblo

LCU Claimed Their Second 7-0 Sweep Among a Trio of Wins in Pueblo Duals

PUEBLO, Colo. (September 17, 2023) – Lubbock Christian University's men's tennis program completed their fall duals schedule with a 3-0 record, as they were flawless at the Pueblo Duals hosted by Colorado State Pueblo.

The Chaparrals collected wins over Colorado College (7-0), Colorado Mesa (6-1) and Metropolitan State of Denver (5-2). LCU combined on the weekend going 9-0 in doubles and 15-3 in singles play. Herman Aguirre (3-0), Kelly Giese (3-0), Blas Ruiz Romero (3-0) and Pablo Segura (2-0) went unbeaten in singles play in Pueblo. Aguirre (6-0) and Segura (5-0) remain perfect overall on the season. In doubles play, teams of Martins Abamu / Giese (3-0), Mattia Ghedin / Tristan Vigneron (3-0) and Aguirre / Segura (3-0) were perfect. Abamu / Giese and Aguirre / Segura are both 5-0 as doubles teams this season (overall competitions).

Vs. Colorado College
LCU opened the Pueblo Duals Thursday facing Division III Colorado College. The Lady Chaps swept doubles play with Abamu / Giese, Ghendin / Vigneron and Aguirre / Segura claiming wins for the 1-0 dual lead.

The dual was decided early, as LCU swept singles play for their second 7-0 score in program history. Ghedin (No.3-singles) had the easiest of tasks, with a 6-0, 6-3 win, and LCU did not drop any of the 12 singles sets played (Abamu, Giese, Aguirre, Ruiz Romero and Segura all winning in straight sets).

Vs. Colorado Mesa
The Chaparrals waited out a rain delay Friday and eventually moved their match with Colorado Mesa indoors Friday night (originally scheduled for a Friday morning match). LCU was up for the wait, as they claimed the match 6-1.

Abamu / Giese, Ghedin / Vigneron and Aguirre / Segura each won their doubles match to sweep the doubles point. Ghedin was involved in a wild No.3-singles match, as the first two sets went into tiebreakers and each were split to force a tiebreaking set, which Ghedin dropped 15-13. The loss was not of concern to the Chaps, as Abamu (needed a tiebreaking win in the first set to win his No.1 singles match), Giese (No.2-singles), Aguirre (No.4-singles), Ruiz Romero (No.5-singles) and Segura (No.6-singles) each claiming wins in their singles matches. Aguirre's win was the clinching win.

Vs. Metro State
LCU wrapped up with their Colorado stay Saturday morning with Metro State, in a contest the Chaps claimed 5-2. Aguirre / Segura and Ghedin / Vigneron opened doubles play with wins to give LCU a 1-0 lead in the dual, but Abamu / Giese played out their match won the tiebreaker 7-4 to complete the doubles sweep.

Giese (No.2-singles) and Aguirre (No.4-singles) opened singles play with wins and LCU took a 3-0 lead in the dual before things got interesting. MSUD won No.1-singles and No.3-singles matches (tiebreaker was decided in No.3-singles match), but Vigneron clinched the win with a No.6-singles win 6-2, 6-1. Ruiz Romero won his No.5-singles match with a 10-3 tiebreaking win.

Next Up
The Chaps have a 3-0 record to take into the spring portion of their schedule, as the remaining fall events are individual tournaments, including the ITA Men's Regional LCU is hosting Sept.28 at Penny Gullo Tennis Complex.
